  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Beginning campaign in minors

The Cardinals optioned McGreevy to Triple-A Memphis on Sunday.

McGreevy was in the running for a rotation spot and had an excellent spring with a 1.08 ERA, 0.60 WHIP and 12:0 K:BB over 16.2 innings. However, St. Louis is giving Matthew Liberatore the fifth-starter role to begin the season, while McGreevy will start in the minors and Steven Matz will work in long relief. The Cardinals intend to go to a six-man rotation beginning April 16, per Katie Woo of The Athletic, and McGreevy seems to be a prime candidate to move into the big-league rotation at that point.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Impresses again Friday

McGreevy struck out four while yielding just one hit over five scoreless frames in Friday's Grapefruit League start versus the Mets.

McGreevy's impressive spring continues, as he now boasts a 1.08 ERA, 0.60 WHIP and 12:0 K:BB across 16.2 innings of work. The young righty could be left out of the Cardinals' Opening Day rotation in spite of the strong Grapefruit League showing, although the club is mulling a six-man setup that would help McGreevy's chances.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: St. Louis mulling six-man rotation

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Monday that the club is discussing using a six-man rotation to begin the season, with McGreevy serving as the sixth starter, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Sonny Gray, Erick Fedde and Miles Mikolas are locked into rotation spots, and Andre Pallante and Steven Matz are heavily favored for two other slots. Utilizing a six-man rotation would add a spot for McGreevy, who could swing back-and-forth between starting and relieving, per Denton. McGreevy has been the club's best starter this spring, allowing just two runs with an 8:0 K:BB over 11.2 innings.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Manager rules out relief role

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol on Sunday dismissed the possibility of McGreevy making the Opening Day roster as a reliever, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

There had been some talk of McGreevy being used in the bullpen if he's unable to crack the Opening Day rotation, but Marmol said of the righty that, "I don't see him as a guy who will benefit at all by going to the 'pen and breaking with us in that type of role." McGreevy has been arguably the team's best starter this spring, allowing just one run with a 4:1 K:BB over 7.2 innings. However, if the Cardinals elect to use Steven Matz in the rotation -- which it seems they're leaning toward doing -- McGreevy might be the odd man out, which would mean starting the year in the rotation at Triple-A Memphis.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Could be considered for bullpen

The Cardinals might consider putting McGreevy in their Opening Day bullpen, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

McGreevy has allowed only one hit over five scoreless innings this spring and is still in the mix to break camp as part of the rotation. However, if Andre Pallante and Steven Matz nab the team's final two rotation spots, it's possible McGreevy will be carried on the roster as a reliever, at least initially. The other option would be to keep him stretched out as a starter at Triple-A Memphis.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Two perfect frames in spring start

McGreevy struck out a pair in two perfect frames this past week against the Yankees in his spring debut.

All six batters McGreevy faced were projected regulars for the Yankees, and he disposed of them efficiently, needing just 21 pitches to cruise through his two frames. Steven Matz appears to be McGreevy's biggest competition for a spot in the Cardinals' rotation, and Matz also tossed two scoreless innings in his first Grapefruit League start. A trade of either Matz or Erick Fedde would figure to secure McGreevy's spot.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Shows up in great shape

McGreevy added 15 pounds of muscle this offseason, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

McGreevy has a shot at winning one of the last spots in the Cardinals rotation in camp and he's taking the opportunity very seriously, saying he tried to trim as much body fat as he could while putting on the 15 pounds of muscle. "He looks good [this spring training]," said manager Oliver Marmol. "He put on some weight and had a really good offseason, and I'm excited to see what's coming out of that arm." The 24-year-old righty logged 150 innings at Triple-A and 23 innings in the majors last season. He registered an elite 62.5 percent groundball rate and 2.3 percent walk rate in the majors, leading to a 0.78 WHIP. McGreevy sits in the low-90s with his fastball, but he has a plus slider and his command might be double-plus. Andre Pallante and Steven Matz may have a leg up on him for the final two spots in the rotation, but McGreevy is arguably the most appealing of the three from a fantasy perspective.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Fires gem Sunday

McGreevy (3-0) allowed a run on five hits over eight innings Sunday, striking out six and earning a win over the Giants.

McGreevy let just one Giant reach scoring position through six frames before finally coughing up an RBI single to Brett Wisely in the seventh inning. McGreevy was very efficient, throwing 64 of 91 pitches for strikes, though he forced only seven whiffs. He was impressive during his short rookie season; McGreevy posted a 1.96 ERA and an 18:2 K:BB through 23 frames.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: No-decision at Colorado

McGreevy allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Tuesday.

McGreevy left the game down 3-2, but the Cardinals were able to rally ahead to get him off the hook. The rookie has pitched to a 2.40 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 12:2 K:BB over his first 15 innings in the majors, and this was the first time in three appearances (two starts) he didn't come away with a win. McGreevy is tentatively projected to start the Cardinals' season finale in San Francisco on Sunday.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Joining rotation Tuesday

McGreevy is listed as the Cardinals' scheduled starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Rockies at Coors Field.

After being called up from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, McGreevy was put to work out of the bullpen a day later in the Cardinals' game against the Pirates. He scooped up the win while tossing three scoreless innings in relief, and he'll now get the chance to enter the St. Louis rotation for the final week of the season due to Lance Lynn (knee) and Sonny Gray (forearm) both recently going on the injured list. Unless the Cardinals elect to expand their rotation to six men by moving Steven Matz from the bullpen, McGreevy will tentatively line up for two starts during the final week of the season. After Tuesday's contest in Colorado, McGreevy would be lined up to take the hill for the finale Sunday in San Francisco.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Earns win in relief

McGreevy (2-0) allowed two hits and struck out four without walking a batter over three scoreless innings to earn the win Wednesday over Pirates.

The Cardinals' six-run rally in the seventh inning gave McGreevy a lead, and he didn't let the Pirates back in. He's won both of his major-league appearances this season, the other one being an excellent seven-inning start versus the Rangers on July 31. Lance Lynn's season is done due to renewed right knee inflammation, which gives McGreevy an opportunity to potentially pick up a start in the final week if the Cardinals want to stick with a six-man rotation.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Recalled from Triple-A

The Cardinals recalled McGreevy from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

St. Louis' initial plan appears to be using McGreevy in relief, though he could be a candidate to make a start or two before the season comes to a close. He went seven frames of one-run ball in a spot start earlier this season in his major-league debut and collected a 4.02 ERA and 138:44 K:BB across 150 innings covering 27 outings at Memphis.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Joining big-league club

The Cardinals are expected to recall McGreevy from Triple-A Memphis prior to Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

McGreevy was scratched from a scheduled start Tuesday for Memphis, and that move was evidently made because he's headed back to the majors. While a start down the stretch is possible, McGreevy is expected to be available in long relief for now. He threw seven innings of one-run ball in a spot start in his major-league debut in late July.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Sent back to Memphis

The Cardinals optioned McGreevy to Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.

McGreevy was impressive during his MLB debut Wednesday, throwing seven innings of one-run ball while coming away with the win. However, he will be sent back to Triple-A to clear a rotation spot for Erick Fedde, who was acquired in a trade with the White Sox on Monday.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Impressive in big-league debut

McGreevy (1-0) earned the win over Texas on Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out three batters over seven innings.

McGreevy wasn't overpowering, but he had good control and allowed just one extra-base hit over his seven frames. The right-hander has never posted big strikeout numbers in the minors, and he recorded a 4.45 ERA across 109.1 innings with Triple-A Memphis this season prior to his call-up Wednesday, so fantasy managers are likely best served tempering expectations rather than rushing to the waiver wire to claim the 24-year-old. This was likely just a spot start in the majors for McGreevy, though he certainly showed enough to be a consideration for St. Louis the next time a spare arm is needed.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Promoted ahead of MLB debut

The Cardinals selected McGreevy's contract from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

McGreevy will start Wednesday's series finale against the Rangers in what will be his major-league debut. The right-hander has put up pedestrian numbers at Memphis this season, collecting a 4.45 ERA and 96:36 K:BB over 109.1 innings. He's been at his best over the last two months, though, with a 2.94 ERA and 52:19 K:BB across 52 frames since June 1. McGreevy is expected to be sent back down to Memphis after the spot start.

  • Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Set for MLB debut Wednesday

The Cardinals will call up McGreevy from Triple-A Memphis to start Wednesday's game against the Rangers, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

The Cardinals are in a stretch of 16 games without a day off, so they'll give McGreevy a spot start in order to provide some rest for their regular rotation members. The 2021 first-round pick will be making his major-league debut Wednesday after turning in a 4.45 ERA and 96:36 K:BB over 109.1 innings covering 20 starts with Memphis. He's not currently on the Cardinals' 40-man roster.
