Chicago protected Triantos from the Rule 5 Draft over the winter by adding him to its 40-man roster, but the 23-year-old was never viewed as a likely candidate to break camp with the big club. Triantos is slated to begin the season at Iowa, where he slashed .260/.318/.371 with seven home runs and 28 stolen bases across 444 plate appearances in 2025.

Triantos' dynasty value has taken a hit over the past year, as he has been a below-league-average hitter in 128 games at Triple-A dating back to 2024. A bat-first player, Triantos has shown remarkable pure hitting ability at Double-A and in the Arizona Fall League, so the Cubs will still protect him from the Rule 5 Draft despite the fact he slashed .258/.315/.369 in 102 games at Triple-A in 2025. If Triantos can take a step forward as a hitter, his propensity to steal bases could eventually come in handy in fantasy -- he has stolen 78 bases over the past two seasons.

The Cubs have extended Triantos an invitation to major-league camp during spring training, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
He'll be joined in camp by fellow top prospects Matt Shaw -- arguably the favorite to be the Opening Day third baseman -- and Moises Ballesteros, among others. Triantos, 22, is lacking in the power department, but he put together a healthy .300/.346/.427 slash line with seven homers and 47 steals between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa last season. A debut sometime in 2025 for the infielder is possible.
The Cubs promoted Triantos from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday, Tommy Birch of The Des Moines Register reports.
Triantos will head to Iowa after he compiled a .300 average with seven home runs, 40 RBI, 63 runs scored and 38 stolen bases over 89 games with Tennessee. He'll join fellow infielder Matt Shaw and outfielder Kevin Alcantara in being promoted to Triple-A.

Triantos is hitting .304 with three home runs, eight steals and a 10.9 percent strikeout rate in 33 games for Double-A Tennessee.
Triantos boasts the fourth-lowest strikeout rate among qualified hitters at Double-A, and his .168 ISO and .472 SLG are easily career bests above rookie ball. The 21-year-old second baseman hit four total homers in 83 games last year before breaking out in the Arizona Fall League with a .417 average and three homers in 22 games. He has looked to pull the ball more this year (49.1 Pull%), and given the strength of his hit tool, Triantos could continue tapping into more power as he approaches his mid-20s.
Triantos (knee) is slashing .364/.417/.568 with two home runs, two stolen bases, seven RBI and nine runs in 11 games since being reinstated from High-A South Bend's 7-day injured list May 9.
Triantos spent the first month of the season on the shelf while recovering from the surgery he underwent in March to address a torn meniscus in his right knee, but the 20-year-old has hit the ground running upon reporting to South Bend. After playing primarily at third base in 2022, Triantos has made the move to the keystone in 2023, as nine of his 11 starts to date have come at second base. His other two starts have come as a designated hitter.

Cubs' James Triantos: Undergoes knee surgery

Triantos underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
The procedure is expected to keep him on the shelf for 6-to-8 weeks. Triantos, 20, is coming off a 2022 season at Low-A Myrtle Beach which saw him bat .272/.335/.386 with seven homers and 20 steals over 113 games.

Triantos is hitting .257/.34/.368 with five home runs and 11 steals through 90 games for Single-A Myrtle Beach.
He was hitting over .300 as recently as early June, but Triantos has been ice cold for quite a while now. Since uncharacteristically homering in three straight games to open the month of July, Triantos has gone just 17-for-97 (.175) with zero home runs in 24 games. The bright side is that he's still making plenty of contact -- his 17 percent strikeout rate is a positive -- but Triantos simply hasn't hit the ball very hard this year.

After he hit six homers in 25 games in rookie ball last year, Triantos was certainly expected to show much more power than this, but at least he's still getting his hits and using his wheels. He hasn't been caught stealing a single time yet this season after going only 3-for-6 last year. Triantos' hit tool looks good, but it's unlikely steals will be a big part of his game in the majors, so he'll need to start putting the ball over the fence a little more often to avoid falling into a utility profile.

Triantos went 2-for-2 with an RBI in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Angels.
Triantos, the 56th overall pick in the 2021 Draft last July, looked good in his first action of the spring. The 19-year-old is still presumably a few years away from his MLB debut, but he's someone to keep an eye on if his bat plays well as he move through the minors. He was considered an above-average hitting prospect coming out of Madison High School in Vienna, Virginia.
