Wells faces competition for a starting spot on the wings in Memphis to begin the 2026-27 season, Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.
Jerami Grant, Cedric Coward and Cam Spencer are all competing with Wells for a starting spot on the wings. The 23-year-old swingman has started 143 of his 148 career regular-season appearances since being drafted by Memphis with the 39th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, and he averaged 12.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.9 steals in 26.4 minutes per contest across 69 regular-season games (all starts) in 2025-26. Even if he comes off the bench to begin the campaign, Wells should retain a meaningful role.

Grizzlies' Jaylen Wells: Fully participating in camp

Wells (toe) has been a full participant to begin training camp, Grizzlies president of basketball operations Zach Kleiman said, according to Memphis reporter Landon Speck.
Wells has been cleared for full basketball activities after undergoing toe surgery in March and is practicing without restrictions during camp. His availability should give him plenty of time to ramp up during the preseason while competing for a prominent role on the wing.
Wells (toe) should continue competing for rotation minutes on the wing despite Memphis adding Cameron Boozer with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Wells' defensive ability and complementary skill set could help him carve out a role alongside the Grizzlies' established core. However, increased competition for minutes may make consistent opportunities more difficult to secure. In addition to Boozer, the Grizzlies also added forward Karim Lopez in the first round.

The Grizzlies announced Tuesday that Wells (toe) underwent a successful procedure to stabilize his right great toe and will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign.
Wells won't return this season after undergoing a procedure to repair a tendon avulsion fracture, though he is expected to make a full recovery ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. The 22-year-old appeared in 69 regular-season games in his sophomore season, starting all of them and finishing with averages of 12.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.1 blocks and 0.9 steals while shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from deep across 26.4 minutes per contest.
