Top Eric Berry News

  • Eric Berry: Trending toward return

Berry said Sunday that he plans to play in the NFL next season, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Per Garafolo, Berry had a few opportunities to play this past season, but turned them down in order to get healthier mentally and physically. It was a tough 2019 for the veteran, as he was cut by Kansas City in the offseason and battled a heel issue. It's still not clear how much of a market there will be for the 31-year-old, who's played just three games over the past two seasons.

  • Eric Berry: No interest from Cowboys

The Cowboys don't have interest in signing Berry (heel), multiple sources told Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan Dallas reports.

Berry visited Dallas in March after he was released from Kansas City, but he left without a deal and the Cowboys signed another veteran in George Iloka just days later. While Berry reportedly intends to sign a deal somewhere before the start of training camp, it's not clear how much of a market there is for the 30-year-old who's missed 29 of 32 games over the past two seasons.

  • Eric Berry: Meeting with Cowboys

The Cowboys will host Berry (heel) on Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

After being linked with Earl Thomas (leg) for the better part of a year, Dallas apparently didn't reach out to the unrestricted free agent last week, per Todd Archer of ESPN.com. Management now is honing in on Berry, who has tended to health issues of his own in recent seasons. Since notching 77 tackles and picking off four passes in 2016, he's combined for 18 tackles and no interceptions in three appearances with the Chiefs the past two years. If he signs a deal with the Cowboys, Berry likely will serve as depth at the safety position, considering his inability to stay on the field of late.

  • Eric Berry: Hopeful for 2019

Berry (heel) was told he should be able to play in 2019 with the ankle condition that sidelined him last year, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Berry visited a renowned foot and ankle specialist, Dr. Robert Anderson, in Green Bay after the season. After a thorough examination, the defensive back was told he will not require surgery and that the injury should be something he can play through. Garafolo noted that the new treatment plan Anderson devised is supposed to maintain Berry's condition better than last season, when the three-time Pro Bowler appeared in just two games while constantly being listed as "day-to-day" on the injury report. When he can show teams he's on the right track, Berry is expected to garner "significant immediate interest" on the open market.

  • Eric Berry: Cut by Kansas City

Berry (heel) was released by the Chiefs on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

More than $7 million of Berry's salary would have become fully guaranteed had Kansas City kept him on the roster through Friday. Per Brooke Pryor of The Kansas City Star, the Chiefs will take on roughly $7 million in dead money this season but will also net a cap savings of $9.5 million. While the reality of this transaction might be hard to swallow for most Chiefs fans, it's not a huge surprise the organization didn't want to invest big money into a 30-year-old safety who has been limited to three games over the past two seasons while recovering from a devastating Achilles/heel injury. Once he can prove he's healthy, Berry shouldn't have trouble finding a new home.
