  • Marcus Davenport: Hanging up cleats

Davenport has opted to retire from the NFL following his release from the Bears' practice squad Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Davenport was granted his release by the Bears on Monday, and now the reasoning for his request is clear. The UTSA product was a first-round selection of the Saints in the 2018 NFL Draft and played the first five years of his NFL career in New Orleans before spending time in Minnesota and Detroit before joining Chicago in training camp for the 2026 season. He played a total of 78 regular-season games (43 starts) in the NFL and will finish his career with 166 tackles (88 solo), including 25.0 sacks, four pass defenses, seven forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

  • Marcus Davenport: Organizes release after debut

The Bears released Davenport from the practice squad Monday, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Davenport played 12 defensive snaps and one special-teams snap in Sunday's win over the Jets, logging one tackle in the effort. The defensive end was released from the practice squad Monday at his own request. It is unclear why the 30-year-old requested his release and what his current NFL plans may be.

  • Bears' Marcus Davenport: Heading to Windy City

The Bears signed Davenport to a contract Monday, NFL reporter Jordan Schultz reports.

Davenport will reunite with Dennis Allen, with the duo having previously worked together in New Orleans. Davenport appeared in only eight regular-season games for the Lions in 2025 due to a shoulder injury, finishing with 14 tackles (six solo), including 1.0 sacks. The 2018 first-rounder gives the Bears rotational depth at defensive end behind projected starters Dayo Odeyingbo and Montez Sweat.

  • Lions' Marcus Davenport: Injury-riddled 2025

Davenport logged 14 tackles (eight solo), including 1.0 sacks, across eight regular-season games in 2025.

Davenport missed Week 3 through Week 12 with shoulder and pectoral injuries. The rotational defensive end was a consistent contributor when healthy, participating in between 34 percent and 78 percent of defensive snaps in the games he suited up for. The 29-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent at the start of the new league year in March.

  • Lions' Marcus Davenport: Active to face Vikings

Davenport (shoulder) is active for Thursday's contest against Minnesota.

Davenport was limited in practice leading up to Thursday's divisional clash, but he's ultimately earned the green light to suit up Christmas Day. Across six regular-season appearances so far, Davenport has totaled 10 tackles (four solo) including 1.0 sacks.

  • Lions' Marcus Davenport: Limited to open Week 17 prep

Davenport (shoulder) was a limited participant in Tuesday's walkthrough practice.

Davenport has opened the week with back-to-back limited sessions due to a shoulder injury that he picked up during the Lions' 29-24 loss to the Steelers on Sunday. The Lions will hold their last practice Wednesday, and if Davenport is a full participant in that session, he would likely avoid an injury designation for Detroit's Christmas Day clash against Minnesota.

  • Lions' Marcus Davenport: Questionable to return

Davenport (shoulder) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Steelers.

Davenport went down in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury he sustained during a rep on the defensive line. If the defensive end is unable to return, Tyrus Wheat may receive more rotational snaps at defensive end to close out the game.
