  • Broncos' Jonathon Cooper: Could make 2026 debut Sunday

Cooper had his roster exemption removed by the Broncos on Saturday and is available for Sunday's road game against the Cardinals, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.

Cooper opened the season on the commissioner's exempt list while under investigation for domestic incidents that happened in June. Now that he's back on the roster, he could make his 2026 debut Sunday, and his return would bolster a Broncos' pass rush that will be without Jonah Elliss (ankle, IR) for at least the next four games. Across 17 regular-season games in 2025, Cooper accumulated 50 tackles (23 solo), including 8.0 sacks, and four pass defenses.

Cooper (personal) was reinstated from the Commissioner Exempt List on Friday, Tom Pelissero of Netflix reports.

Cooper was placed on the Exempt List on Aug. 30 while under investigation for domestic incidents that took place in June. The NFL is still conducting its own investigation, but as of now, Cooper is eligible to make his Broncos debut in Week 7 against the Cardinals.

  • Broncos' Jonathon Cooper: Pleads not guilty Monday

Cooper pleaded not guilty to five charges of domestic violence in a Douglas County (Colo.) courtroom Monday, Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com reports.

Cooper now has a jury trial scheduled to begin Nov. 10 following a pair of domestic incidents that occurred a week apart in early June. The NFL placed him on the Commissioner's Exempt List on Sunday, which means he still gets paid and can attend team meetings but can't practice or play in games. Cooper's stint on the list is indefinite but may last for as long as his legal situation is playing out in court.

He faces five charges, including second-degree felony assault. While on the Commissioner's Exempt List for an indefinite period of time, Cooper will continue to get paid, but he won't be eligible to practice or play in games.

  • Broncos' Jonathon Cooper: Excused from minicamp

The Broncos excused Cooper from this week's mandatory minicamp, Jeff Legwold of ESPN reports.

"He's taking this time, obviously, he's got to work on himself,'' coach Sean Payton said Tuesday of Cooper, who was arrested twice during a seven-day span earlier this month on multiple domestic violence charges, including one felony. When asked if the Broncos planned to let the legal process conclude before a decision on Cooper's future with the team is made, Payton said: "There's a process period from the league and that involves the local law enforcement. We'll continue to gather that information.'' Regarding the linebacker's legal situation, a league spokesman said last week only that the NFL was monitoring the case.

  • Broncos' Jonathon Cooper: Facing additional serious charges

Cooper has had additional charges of felony second-degree assault by strangulation and misdemeanor third-degree assault added to his previous charge of criminal mischief with a domestic violence enhancer, Luca Evans of The Denver Post reports.

Cooper was arrested during the evening of June 4 and made a court appearance Monday, during which he pleaded not guilty to the original charge. A trial has been scheduled for late July. Cooper has been with the Broncos during OTAs since Monday, and head coach Sean Payton said team leadership had a "long visit" with the outside linebacker in regard to the incident that spurred the legal charges. Payton added, "We'll follow the league's guidelines, and I'm sure a lot of that will be led by the local authorities' guidelines. We'll pay attention to all of it."
