  • Giants' Casey Schmitt: Likely done for season

Giants manager Tony Vitello said Wednesday that Schmitt will require arthroscopic surgery for the torn meniscus in his left knee and will "more than likely" miss the rest of the season, Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Vitello said a date hasn't been set for when Schmitt will have surgery, though the 27-year-old is slated to have his procedure performed "as soon as possible." A formal recovery timeline for Schmitt should be provided when the operation is completed, as it's not yet known whether he'll require a meniscectomy or a full meniscus repair. Schmitt would likely face a 3-to-6-week recovery if he requires the former procedure, while a full repair often entails a 4-to-6-month recovery timeline. The 45-62 Giants are well out of the mix for a playoff spot, so Schmitt doesn't look like he'll be rushed back into action even if he gets a meniscectomy and hits no snags in the rehab process. Schmitt had been in the midst of a breakout campaign before suffering the knee injury, slashing .271/.301/.483 with 21 home runs, nine stolen bases, 55 RBI and 47 runs across 409 plate appearances while making starts at all four infield spots in addition to left field.

  • Braves' Mike Yastrzemski: Sitting for first game of day

Yastrzemski is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Mets.

Lefty Sean Manaea is on the bump for the Mets for the first game of the day, so the left-handed-hitting Yastrzemski will retreat to the bench. Expect Yastrzemski to return to the starting nine for the nightcap, when right-hander Christian Scott will toe the rubber for New York.

  • Oneil Cruz CF | PIT

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Cleared for all baseball activities

Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Cruz (hand) has been cleared for all baseball activities, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Cruz is finally trending in the right direction as he continues rehabbing a fractured left hand. The Pirates anticipate the center fielder getting in some live at-bats later this week or early next week before heading out on a rehab assignment shortly thereafter. Cruz is eligible to return from the 60-day injured list Aug. 7, and he could be ready to go on or around that date if all goes well. Jake Mangum has been filling in as the Pirates' everyday center fielder since Cruz went down, but he will revert to fourth-outfielder duties once Cruz is back in the fold.

  • Dylan Crews RF | WAS

Nationals' Dylan Crews: Taking seat Wednesday

Crews is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Blue Jays.

Crews homered in the Nationals' victory Tuesday, but he'll get some rest during Wednesday's afternoon tilt after starting the last six games. Daylen Lile, Jacob Young and James Wood will patrol the outfield for the Nats.

  • Jakob Marsee CF | MIA

Marlins' Jakob Marsee: Late addition to lineup

Marsee was added to the Miami lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies and will start in center field and bat ninth, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

With southpaw Jesus Luzardo on the hill for the Phillies, the left-handed-hitting Marsee had been scheduled to receive the afternoon off. However, after third baseman Leo Jimenez was a late scratch due to a stomach ailment, Javier Sanoja will cover the hot corner, while Marsee will be needed to fill the open outfield spot. Marsee will be flanked in the outfield by Heriberto Hernandez in left and Esteury Ruiz in right.

  • Jake Mangum CF | PIT

Pirates' Jake Mangum: Out of Pittsburgh lineup

Mangum is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Diamondbacks.

Mangum will rest during Wednesday's matinee after starting in center field each of the last five days. Jhostynxon Garcia will enter the Pirates' lineup in center field and will bat eighth.

  • Luis Robert CF | BAL

Mets' Luis Robert: Resting for early game

Robert is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus Atlanta.

The Mets will go with A.J. Ewing in center field for the first game of the day while Robert rests. Robert will most likely be back in the starting nine for the nightcap.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryan Waldschmidt: Exiting starting lineup

Waldschmidt is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game in Pittsburgh.

Waldschmidt started the first two games of the series, going 3-for-7 with one run scored, but he will exit the lineup for Wednesday's finale. Jorge Barrosa will get a start in center field for the Diamondbacks.

  • Owen Caissie RF | MIA

Marlins' Owen Caissie: Quick start to rehab stint

Caissie (calf) went 1-for-1 with two walks and a solo home run for Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old outfielder hasn't suited up for the Marlins since July 8 due to a calf strain, but he made an immediate impact on his rehab assignment after being cleared for game action. Caissie was the DH on Tuesday, but per Perla Paredes of MLB.com, Marlins manager Clayton McCullough indicated Caissie would play defense Wednesday, and he could be activated from the IL as soon as this weekend.

  • Tyler Callihan RF | PIT

Pirates' Tyler Callihan: Sent back to Triple-A

The Pirates optioned Callihan to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, Danny Demilio of PittsburghBaseballNow.com reports.

Callihan had settled into the strong side of a platoon at multiple positions shortly after being called up from Indianapolis on May 28, but he was benched against a righty (Brandon Pfaadt) in Tuesday's 8-7 loss to Arizona and will now find himself back in the minors after a prolonged dry spell at the plate. After opening his time in Pittsburgh by getting on base at a .447 clip and providing five extra-base hits and a stolen base through his first 13 games, Callihan slashed just .156/.191/.266 with one home run, no steals and a 42 percent strikeout rate over his subsequent 27 contests. The Pirates will likely lean on a committee of Marcell Ozuna, Jhostynxon Garcia and Jared Triolo to replace Callihan's spot in the lineup versus right-handed pitching.
