Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Drawing another start

Sheehan is slated to start Sunday's game in Miami, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

The Dodgers toyed with the idea of deploying Sheehan behind an opener Sunday, but he'll instead make a second consecutive appearance as a starter following his promotion from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday. Pitching for the big club for the first time since Aug. 2 on Monday, Sheehan twirled a gem in a win over the Reds, striking out 10 while yielding just one run on three hits and one walk across 5.2 innings. For the season, Sheehan has gone 5-8 with a 5.08 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 118:31 K:BB over 101 innings in 21 starts with Los Angeles.

  • Pavin Smith 1B | ARI

His third-inning single knocked in the Diamondbacks' first run and was his lone plate appearance, as Ildemaro Vargas pinch hit for him in the fifth inning against left-hander Robert Garcia. Smith could get regular turns as a DH against righties, against whom Arizona ranks next-to-last in the league with a .684 OPS.

  • Ryne Nelson SP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Makes third rehab appearance

Nelson (elbow) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two over 1.2 innings for Triple-A Reno on Saturday.

  • Giants' Cesar Perdomo: Flops against Friars in first loss

Perdomo (0-1) took the loss Saturday, coughing up five runs on 10 hits and two walks over 4.2 innings as the Giants were downed 7-6 by the Padres. He struck out three.

After a scoreless first frame, Perdomo got tagged for at least one run in each inning he remained on the mound until finally getting chased after 74 pitches (48 strikes). With the Giants out of the playoff picture, one bad performance in his second career start probably isn't going to cost the 24-year-old southpaw his spot in the rotation as the team auditions players for 2027. Perdomo will take a 3.68 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB over 14.2 MLB innings into his next start, which is set to come on the road next weekend against the Dodgers.

He has given up 20 runs over 31.1 innings across his last five starts, going winless in that stretch. For the season, the right-hander is at a 3.77 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 84:29 K:BB through 124 innings over 27 games (17 starts). Pfaadt is projected to make his next start at home versus the Yankees.
