GIF: Hunter Pence's 3 hits in 1
In the Giants' 5-run third inning of Game 7, Hunter Pence came up with the big hit, scoring three runs. But replays showed his bat hit the ball three different times before ending up in center field.
In what seems destined to be the defining moment of Game 7 of the National League Championship Series, Hunter Pence hit the ball three times on his three-run single in the Giants five-run third.
Here's the GIF, from MLBGIFs.com, of Fox's amazing super slow-motion replays. Watch as the ball breaks Pence's bat and then hits the bat two more times.
Technology is incredible, isn't it?
At first blush, it seemed unthinkable that Pete Kozma read the liner off the bat so wrong, but when you see that it hit the bat three -- THREE -- times, it's perfectly understandable. Some will still blame Kozma for the inning, but it had to be next to impossible to play that ball correctly.
Watch here (again from MLBGIFs.com), as Kozma first goes to his right and then to his left...
Pence got two RBI on the play and then a third run scored on center fielder Jon Jay's error handling the ball, to give San Francisco a 5-0 lead. The Giants added two more in the inning for a 7-0 lead after three innings.
The play may have also shook Kozma, the rookie shortstop. He factored into the next two runs, as well. First he tried to force Pence at home on Brandon Crawford's bases-loaded grounder, but his throw was late. Then on a potential inning-ending double play, his feed to second baseman Daniel Descalso was high and Descalso's throw to first was low, allowing yet another run to score.
