Tahir Whitehead: Added to Cardinals' practice squad
Whitehead was signed to the Cardinals' practice squad Tuesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Whitehead last played in 2020, making 51 tackles, recovering a fumble and intercepting a pass in 14 games with the Panthers. With the injury to J.J. Watt (shoulder), the Cardinals could end up using Whitehead as a depth piece on the defensive unit.

Panthers' Tahir Whitehead: Production declines with Panthers
Whitehead finished the 2020 season with 51 tackles (27 solo), one interception and one fumble recovery in 14 games played.
Whitehead signed a one-year deal with the Panthers as they sought to replace All-Pro linebacker Luke Kuechly following his retirement last offseason. Although the 30-year-old went on to start nine games, Whitehead played under 40 percent of Carolina's defensive plays overall, snapping his four-season streak of having 100-plus tackles. As he aims to rehab his value in 2021, it wouldn't be surprising to see Whitehead sign elsewhere in free agency.

Panthers' Tahir Whitehead: Cleared for Sunday's game
Whitehead (ribs) is active for Sunday's game against the Vikings, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
Whitehead was active last week, but it appeared only to be in case of emergency, as he didn't log a snap on defense or special teams. Jermaine Carter has apparently usurped him as the starting middle linebacker anyway, and there's no indication that will change Sunday.

Whitehead (ribs) is active for Sunday's game versus the Lions, Bill Voth of the Panthers' official site reports.
Whitehead has started nine games at middle linebacker this season, but he hasn't logged more than 60 percent of the defensive snaps in a game since Week 2. As a result, he may fall short of 100 tackles for the first time since the 2015 season, as he's averaging 4.9 stops per game.

Whitehead's rib injury kept him from practicing Wednesday, so it's encouraging to see him participating in at least limited fashion Thursday. However, the veteran linebacker has now been held below 50 percent of defensive snaps in back-to-back games, so he'll be difficult to trust for fantasy purposes even if he does suit up against the Lions on Sunday.

This is a new injury for Whitehead, who hasn't been on the injury report since dealing with a thigh injury in early October. It's possible this was more of a maintenance day for the 30-year-old linebacker, but Whitehead's participation level in practice over the rest of the week should dictate his status for Sunday's clash with the Lions.

Whitehead (thigh) is active for Sunday's matchup against Arizona.
The newly acquired Whitehead collected six or more tackles in each of his first three games as a Panther, and he was not designated with an injury immediately following the team's Week 3 win over the Chargers. Whitehead popped up on the injury report Saturday, though the severity of the issue does not seem especially prohibitive given that he will not miss any game time. The 30-year-old will be tasked with helping the Panthers contain Arizona's seventh-ranked rushing attack (149.7 yards per game).

Whitehead wasn't listed on the injury report all week, but he popped up Saturday with a thigh injury. The severity is unknown, so he should be considered a true game-time decision at this time. Adarius Taylor is slated to start at middle linebacker if Whitehead misses time.

Panthers' Tahir Whitehead: Recovers fumble in win
Whitehead made seven tackles (two solo) and recovered a fumble in Sunday's 21-16 win over the Chargers.
Whitehead scooped up a Brian Burns-forced fumble and ran 20 yards into Chargers territory to ultimately set up a field goal during the first quarter. The veteran also pitched in with regular tackling involvement over the course of Sunday's game, bringing his tally to 19 stops thus far. That mark trails only Jeremy Chinn and Shaq Thompson for Carolina's team lead through three weeks.
