Top Charles Omenihu News

  • 49ers' Charles Omenihu: Sent to San Francisco

The Texans traded Omenihu to the 49ers for a future late-round pick Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Despite playing 198 defensive snaps across six appearances for the Texans this season, Omenihu has only produced 11 tackles. The former fifth-round pick registered three sacks his rookie season and four sacks during the 2020 campaign, but he hasn't been able to record a sack this year. He will look for a fresh start with the 49ers, who are currently dealing with multiple injuries to their front seven.

  • Texans' Charles Omenihu: Helps himself preseason Week 2

Omenihu recorded two sacks and recovered a fumble in Saturday's 20-14 win over the Cowboys in preseason Week 2, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.

Omenihu was in position on the Cowboys' first series, falling on a fumble created by Jacob Martin which led to Houston's only offensive touchdown. He later beat a tight end off the edge for a sack, then logged another after a stunt for inside rush. With positions up for grabs along Houston's new four-man front, Omenihu is a riser heading into the final preseason game Saturday against the Buccaneers. Omenihu has been playing end on early downs, then moving inside on obvious passing downs to get quicker bodies on the edge.

Omenihu (hip) returned to practice Monday, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson reports.

  • Texans' Charles Omenihu: Lower-body injury

Omenihu is nursing a lower-body injury and is absent from practice Thursday, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson reports.

Coach David Culley said Omenihu isn't expected to be out long, but he was noncommittal about the defensive end's chances of returning by next week. That being the case, it can be expected that Omenihu will sit out Saturday's exhibition matchup against the Packers.

  • Texans' Charles Omenihu: Ready for Week 11 return

Omenihu (leg) is active for Sunday's matchup against New England.

The 2019 fifth-round draft choice sat out Houston's Week 10 road loss to the Browns, marking his first missed game of the campaign. The Texas product dressed for 14 contests as a rookie, and he's continued to fill an important rotational role on defense in his sophomore season as well. Omenihu has logged two sacks this season while fielding a workload of 29.5 defensive snaps per game, and he has at least one QB hit in seven straight appearances.

  • Texans' Charles Omenihu: Out ahead of Sunday

Omenihu (leg) will not play in Sunday's game against the Browns.

  • Texans' Charles Omenihu: Highly questionable for Sunday

Omenihu (leg) is considered questionable for Sunday's game versus the Browns.

Omenihu didn't practice all week, so it's tough to see a path to play this weekend. The Texans believe he has a chance, however, and we'll know the final verdict about 90 minutes before Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff. If he's forced to sit out, Carlos Watkins could pick up some extra reps at defensive end.

Omenihu recorded his first sack of the season in the third quarter, snuffing out a Ravens red-zone trip and forcing them to kick a field goal. He started Week 1 but came off the bench against Baltimore behind P.J. Hall. He'll be part of the rotation at defensive end all season.

  • Texans' Charles Omenihu: Fills rotational role as rookie

Omenihu recorded 13 tackles, three sacks, two pass breakups and two forced fumbles over 14 regular-season games in 2019.

Omenihu averaged 32 defensive snaps per game, and his playing time ticked up after J.J. Watt's mid-season pectoral injury opened up an opportunity for the rookie. Houston invested a 2019 fifth-round draft pick in Omenihu, a local kid from Houston who played college ball at Texas, and he developed nicely. The Texans used several players at the defensive end spot opposite Watt, so expect Omenihu to be in the mix for a starting job in 2020.
