Thomas was a longshot to make the team who was cut in order to make room for fellow receiver Ryan Switzer, who the Steelers traded up for Monday. The rookie will become an unrestricted free agent if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

Thomas spent time on the Steelers' practice squad throughout the year after failing to make the 53-man roster heading into the regular season. The 23-year-old will now get an opportunity to further his development in the team's offense this offseason.

The addition of Thomas will bring another healthy wideout into the organization with Antonio Brown (lower leg) set to miss at least a week of action, but several dominoes need to fall before the former Georgia Tech quarterback has any role in the Pittsburgh passing attack. Thomas will be used as a receiver by the Rams, but this is still a stretch in Los Angeles, just as it was in New Orleans. However, he does have the speed and versatility to make it as a receiver or defensive back in the league, having posted a 4.30 40-yard dash at his pro day in Georgia.
