  • Jose Fermin LF | STL

    Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Scratched Sunday

Fermin was scratched from the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox for unspecified reasons.

Fermin was penciled in to start at second base before the Cardinals posted an updated lineup that excludes him. Masyn Winn entered the lineup in his place and is starting at shortstop, which pushes Thomas Saggese to second base.

  • White Sox's Braden Montgomery: On bench amid slump

Montgomery is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

The rookie outfielder started the previous 10 games but will get a day to reset after batting .133 (4-for-30) during that stretch. Brenton Doyle will start in center field Sunday, pushing Tristan Peters to right in place of Montgomery.

  • Rays' Cedric Mullins: Out of Sunday's lineup

Mullins is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Mullins has gone 2-for-20 across his past seven games and will take a seat Sunday even though Houston is sending right-hander Hayden Wesneski to the mound. Jonny DeLuca is starting in center field and batting sixth in the series finale.

  • Owen Caissie RF | MIA

Marlins' Owen Caissie: Lands on IL with back injury

The Marlins placed Caissie on the 10-day injured list Sunday due to a lumbar stress reaction.

Caissie was initially diagnosed with hamstring tightness after being removed from Saturday's game against the Dodgers. However, further tests have revealed a lower-back injury for the 24-year-old outfielder, and he won't be eligible to return until the last week of the regular season. Xavier Edwards (thumb) was reinstated from the 10-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Dodgers' Teoscar Hernandez: Receiving Sunday off

Hernandez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins.

It's just a rest day for Hernandez, as manager Dave Roberts wants to avoid having the outfielder start three straight games on Miami's turf field, per David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports. The 33-year-old started the previous 16 contests and posted a 1.057 OPS with six extra-base hits, two steals, 14 RBI and seven runs. Josue De Paula is picking up a start in left field Sunday while Max Muncy serves as the designated hitter.

  • Drew Gilbert CF | SF

Giants' Drew Gilbert: Homers in Saturday's loss

Gilbert went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in Saturday's 7-6 loss to the Padres.

The 25-year-old outfielder lined a single to left field in the first inning before coming around to score, and he added a two-run homer off Bradgley Rodriguez in the eighth. Gilbert recorded his first multi-hit performance of the month Saturday and is batting .217 with five runs scored, two RBI and a home run across 24 plate appearances in September. Overall, he's slashing .235/.321/.382 with 48 runs scored, 38 RBI, nine long balls and a stolen base in 366 plate appearances this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: DFA'd by Arizona

The Diamondbacks designated Gurriel for assignment Sunday.

The veteran slugger has started just three games since being reinstated from the injured list at the start of September, and Arizona has now elected to remove him from the 28-man and 40-man rosters. Gurriel has a .544 OPS with two homers in 201 plate appearances this season, which is the final guaranteed year of his contract. He has a $14 million club option with a $5 million buyout for 2027, which will likely guarantee that he passes through waivers unclaimed.

  • Royals' Jac Caglianone: Rejoining lineup Sunday

Caglianone (elbow) is batting third as the designated hitter Sunday against the Red Sox.

The 23-year-old was held out of the starting nine the past six games due to a flexor strain, but he'll return to the lineup Sunday after making a pinch-hit appearance in Saturday's contest. Caglianone is off to a slow start to September, going 4-for-18 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs through six games.

  • Jordan Walker RF | STL

Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Back in action Sunday

Walker (ankle) is starting in right field and batting cleanup Sunday against the White Sox.

The 24-year-old outfielder was held out of the lineup Saturday after exiting Friday's contest due to an ankle issue, but he's good to go for the series finale versus Chicago. Walker has been scuffling at the plate over his past seven games, going 3-for-23 with two walks, a double and eight strikeouts.

  • Royals' Jac Caglianone: Appears off bench Saturday

Caglianone (elbow) came off the bench and went 0-for-1 in Saturday's 5-1 loss against the Red Sox.

Caglianone pinch hit for Kyle Isbel in the eighth inning, striking out on four pitches before Josh Rojas replaced him defensively. Saturday marked Caglianone's first game action since Sept. 5, as he's dealing with a left flexor strain. Seeing the 23-year-old get an at-bat is a positive sign, but it remains to be seen if he'll be penciled into Sunday's lineup or be able to play defense. On the year, Caglianone is slashing .282/.331/.493 with 23 homers, 70 RBI, 66 runs and six stolen bases in 132 contests.
