  • Zac Gallen SP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Throws four innings Friday

Gallen (elbow) threw 60 pitches and four innings in a simulated game Friday, MLB.com reports.

This was the second significant outing for Gallen, who began a rehab assignment last Sunday. The Diamondbacks plan to activate him for the series against the Royals which begins Monday. Gallen's schedule puts him in line for a possible start Wednesday.

  • Astros' Cristian Javier: Fans eight in win

Javier (2-5) earned the win Friday against the Diamondbacks after allowing one run on one hit and three walks while striking out eight over five innings.

Javier overpowered Arizona for most of his outing, with Gabriel Moreno's fourth-inning solo homer accounting for the only hit and run against him. The right-hander generated 17 swinging strikes among his 79 pitches (47 strikes) and retired the final five batters he faced. Javier's eight punchouts tied his season-high mark, and he's now allowed three runs or fewer in each of his last four appearances. He owns a 4.19 ERA across 34.1 innings since the All-Star break and is scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Phillies.

  • Merrill Kelly SP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly: Takes loss despite quality start

Kelly (9-13) took the loss Friday against the Astros after allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four over six innings. He didn't issue a walk.

This was the fifth time in Kelly's last six starts that he finished with four or fewer strikeouts, posting a 23:18 K:BB in 33.1 innings in that span. He's produced back-to-back quality starts, but the command issues have hurt him a bit since he owns a 5.13 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over that six-game stretch. Kelly is scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Royals.

  • Logan Gilbert SP | SEA

Mariners' Logan Gilbert: Done in by long ball

Gilbert (11-9) allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out 10 over 4.2 innings to take the loss Friday versus the Athletics.

With the way the ball was flying, it looked more like a game in Sacramento than Seattle. Gilbert fell apart in the third inning when he allowed four homers over a span of six batters, accounting for five of the runs on his line in his worst start of the year. The Athletics have been the only team to hold Gilbert under five innings this season, and they've done it twice in Seattle. Gilbert has a 3.71 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 176:42 K:BB through 165 innings over 28 starts this season. He'll look to bounce back at home versus the Rangers in his next start, though it's notable that Gilbert sports a 4.45 ERA at home compared to a 2.70 ERA on the road this year. He's also given up 26 homers this season, 23 of which have gone over the T-Mobile Park fences.

  • Jackson Kent SP | WAS

Nationals' Jackson Kent: Struggles against Dodgers

Kent (1-3) allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks while striking out four over five innings to take the loss versus the Dodgers on Friday.

Kent gave up three runs during the third inning and another in the fourth, which ended up being the difference. It was a bit of a letdown after he earned his first win and quality start against the Marlins last week. Kent has struggled in his first taste of the majors, posting a 5.55 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 21:19 K:BB through 24.1 innings over five starts. He'll likely continue to get on-the-job experience to close out the year, with his next start projected to come in San Diego.

  • Blake Snell SP | LAD

Dodgers' Blake Snell: Secures third win

Snell (3-1) allowed five hits and two walks while striking out seven over six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Nationals on Friday.

Snell continues to excel -- he threw 65 of 100 pitches for strikes in this outing. He's earned quality starts in four of five games since he returned from an elbow procedure, and he's yet to allow more than one run in any of those outings. For the season, Snell has a 1.97 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 43:14 K:BB across 32 innings through six starts. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is lined up to be at Miami, though he could be moved up to work in next week's home series against the Reds if the Dodgers temporarily reduce the rotation to five starters due to injuries.

  • Max Fried SP | NYY

Yankees' Max Fried: Nearly gets quality start

Fried allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out four over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Friday.

Fried got up to 72 pitches (51 strikes), and his efficiency in this contest nearly earned him a quality start. He worked in tandem with Will Warren, who threw 2.1 scoreless and hitless innings in relief. Fried's workload is nearly high enough to trust him to regularly contend for wins over the rest of the season. He's at a 2.73 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 87:29 K:BB through 95.2 innings this year. The star southpaw is projected to make his next start at home in a favorable matchup versus the Rockies.

  • Padres' Walker Buehler: Decent in no-decision

Buehler allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings in a no-decision versus the Yankees on Friday.

Buehler fared well in a tough matchup, limiting the damage to a Ben Rice solo home run in the third inning. Buehler has gone nine straight outings without allowing more than three runs, giving up a total of 17 runs (16 earned) over 47.1 innings in that span. The veteran right-hander is now at a 4.56 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 117:51 K:BB through 136.1 innings, but he's been sharp in the second half of the campaign. Buehler is projected for a home start versus the Nationals in his next outing.

  • Phillies' Cristopher Sanchez: Gives up three runs in loss

Sanchez (16-5) took the loss against Atlanta on Friday, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five across six innings.

Sanchez put the Phillies on the back foot early by allowing three runs in the second inning. He kept Atlanta off the board the rest of the way and secured a second straight quality start, but he didn't get quite enough run support from his Phillies teammates to avoid the loss, and his five punchouts were his fewest since July 6 against the Royals (one). Sanchez will take a 2.58 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 181.1 innings into his next start, which lines up for next week at home against the Astros.

  • Chris Sale SP | ATL

Braves' Chris Sale: Fans seven for 14th win

Sale (14-9) earned the win against the Phillies on Friday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out seven across six innings.

Both of the runs Sale gave up were to Alec Bohm, who hit an RBI double and a solo home run in the second and fourth innings, respectively. Those were the only blemishes to Sale's line Friday, with the veteran southpaw recording an eighth consecutive quality start -- recording at least six strikeouts in each of those outings -- and his 18 quality starts this season are tied for fifth most in the majors. Sale is showing no signs of slowing down in his age-37 season, as he ranks second in the National League in ERA (2.10), third in both wins (14) and WHIP (1.01) and fourth in strikeouts (184) across 150 innings. He's lined up to face the Rays at home next week.
