The Reds beat the Cubs Sunday on a walkoff single in the ninth inning by Ryan Hanigan, but the result was also important on a different front. Chris Volstad of the Cubs made his 24th consecutive start without recording a win. The record is 28.
Two men have gone 28 starts in big-league history without recording a win. Jo-Jo Reyes, who just broke his streak last season, and Matt Keough. Reyes actually went 7-7 after recording a win to break his streak on May 30, 2011. Keough broke his drought September 5, 1979 and ended that season a miserable 2-17.
Volstad hasn't won a game since July 10 of last season. Since then, he's 0-14 with a 5.54 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. His team is 4-20 in those 24 starts.
For a stretch of 12 starts this season, Volstad was demoted to Triple-A Iowa, where he won three games, so he hasn't gone over a year without a win at any level, but he has in the majors, where it counts.
