Delmon Young arrested for allegedly choking, threatening valet
The free agent has gotten himself arrested for alleged incident that sounds pretty ugly.
Free-agent outfielder/DH Delmon Young was arrested Sunday night in Miami and charged with misdemeanor battery.
Andy Slater of 940-AM WINZ was first to report the arrest. We can find the details in the police report here (via Hardball Talk).
Among the details were that Young said the following to a valet at his Miami condominium:
"Stupid Cuban, open the f------ door. I'm gonna f------ kill you, you Latin piece of s---."
He was then alleged to have reached over the valet podium and grabbing him with both hands around the neck for five to six seconds.
Once the victim broke away from the choke and fled the scene, he called the police, who tracked down Young. Young answered the door naked from the waist down and was told by the officers to clothe himself and provide an ID. According to the police report, during his discussion with the officer, Young became "belligerent" and ended up saying "I'll slap you in the face with money you f------ Cuban."
The police report also notes Young was "unsteady on his feet and spoke with slurred speech."
It sounds like this was an ugly incident all around, and not the first time Young has gotten in trouble with the law. Back in 2012, he was arrested for misdemeanor aggravated harassment in New York City, getting into a physical altercation with a group of tourists after yelling anti-Semitic epithets in their direction. He was reportedly "highly intoxicated" during the incident.
In 2006, Young was suspended 50 games for throwing a bat at an umpire while playing for the Durham Bulls in Triple-A.
Considering this situation and Young's on-field performance, it's hard to see him getting a major-league deal before the beginning of the 2016 season. He hit .270/.289/.339 (71 OPS+) in 180 plate appearances last season. That's a pretty empty .270 average, given that Young pretty much never walks and doesn't have much power left. Since teams don't really focus much on average anymore, he was already a pretty unattractive free agent. The arrest should make him look even worse.
The first to report the arrest was Andy Slater of 940-AM WINZ.
