VIDEO: Hawk Harrelson discusses sabermetrics on 'MLB Now'
White Sox play-by-play announcer and old school baseball enthusiast Hawk Harrelson spoke about sabermetrics on MLB Network's 'MLB Now.'
You're not going to find a more old school baseball guy than White Sox play-by-play announcer Ken "Hawk" Harrelson, whose dislike of sabermetrics is no secret. Hawk made an appearance on MLB Network's MLB Now on Thursday, where he (and Harold Reynolds) argue the virtues of advanced stats and old school thinking with Brian Kenny. Here's the clip:
Hawk doesn't think baseball is ready for sabermetrics (strong disagree) and blames them for people losing their jobs (they have created many jobs as well). He also preaches what he calls "TWTW," or the will to win. Don't get me wrong; intangibles absolutely matter, but David Eckstein isn't going to help his team win more than say, Justin Upton, who had his effort and leadership questioned by the Diamondbacks this winter. Talent reigns surpeme.
That said, props to Hawk for the appearance. As much as he disagrees with sabermetric concepts, he has given them plenty of credit for drawing new fans to baseball. In the end, that's all that really matters.
