Jets tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was only active for one regular season game last season and in that one game, he caught one pass. For 2013, Winslow would like to add 99 catches to that total.
"My goal is to have 100 catches," Winslow said, via the Wall Street Journal. "Will I have 100? I don't know. I might have 20, you know? But that's my goal. You play this game for something, and I know at the end of the day that's going to help my team win because that's what I do best."
Winslow's one catch last year came as a member of the New England Patriots, a team he spent exactly nine days with.
The 30-year-old tight end hasn't played in the NFL since being released by New England in September, but the Jets obviously feel Winslow has something left in the tank or else they wouldn't have signed him to a one-year deal in June.
The good news for the Jets is that Winlsow might actually have something left in the tank.The former first-round pick has caught 66 or more passes in five of his eight years in the NFL. The Jets haven't had a full-time tight end catch that many passes in a season since Mickey Shuler caught 70 in 1988 -- although the recently departed Dustin Keller did tally 65 receptions in 2011.
If Winslow -- who has a bothersome right knee -- can stay healthy, he probably won't reach the 100-catch mark, but he just might top Keller's 2011 total. If Winslow does that, there's a good chance he'll end up being the best $840,000 investment the Jets make in 2013.
