  • Giants' Saquon Barkley: Making progress

Coach Brian Daboll said Tuesday that Barkley is "getting better" as he recovers from a sprained right ankle, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.

Barkley was unable to suit up for the Giants' Week 3 loss at San Francisco on a short week last Thursday. Prior to that contest, he revealed to Taylor Rooks of NFL on Prime that he was tending to a "high-ankle sprain," which typically results in a multi-game absence. According to Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site, Daboll also called Barkley "day-to-day" Tuesday, so the running back's listing on Thursday's injury report will be one to look out for. Fortunately, the Giants don't play until Monday against the Seahawks, so there seems to be a chance Barkley may miss only one game due to his ankle injury.

  • Giants' Saquon Barkley: Could be back for Week 4

Barkley (ankle) has "a chance" to get back on the field for the Giants' Week 4 game Oct. 2 versus the Seahawks, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Shortly after being ruled inactive ahead of Thursday's eventual 30-12 loss to the 49ers, Barkley acknowledged that he's dealing with a right high-ankle sprain. The Giants are viewing Barkley as week-to-week, and while an injury of this sort often keeps players out for multiple games, the running back should at least benefit from New York having a quasi-bye week due to the lengthy turnaround between its matchup with the 49ers this past Thursday and the matchup with the Seahawks, which falls on a Monday. The Giants will hold their first official Week 4 practice this coming Thursday, and if Barkley is able to take the field in at least a limited fashion, it would bode well for his chances of being ready to play by next Monday.

  • Giants' Saquon Barkley: Has 'high-ankle sprain'

Barkley isn't playing Thursday at San Francisco due to a "high-ankle sprain," Taylor Rooks reported on NFL on Prime's broadcast.

It's thus no shock that Barkley isn't suiting up four days removed from suffering an ankle injury at the tail end of this past Sunday's win in Arizona. But considering high-ankle sprains often are accompanied by multi-game absences, his status for Week 4 and beyond now is in question. The Giants don't play again until Monday, Oct. 2 against the Seahawks, so Barkley does have a bit more time to recover than normal. If Barkley needs to miss more than one game, Matt Breida should be the main beneficiary out of New York's backfield, with Gary Brightwell and Eric Gray also available for lingering RB reps.
