Alabama quarterback Bryce Young took home the 2021 Heisman Trophy after leading the Crimson Tide to the College Football Playoff in his first year as the starter in Tuscaloosa. The sophomore signal-caller threw for 4,322 yards and 43 touchdowns against just four interceptions in leading the Tide to an eighth SEC championship under Nick Saban. He beat out the other finalists, Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud and Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett for the award.
Young is the fourth Alabama player to win the award -- all of which have come since Saban became the Alabama coach in 2007, and Alabama is now the sixth school to have back-to-back Heisman winners.
Yale: Larry Kelley (1937) and Clint Frank (1938)
Army: Doc Blanchard (1945) and Glenn Davis (1946)
Ohio State: Archie Griffin (1974 and 1975)
USC: Matt Leinart (2004) and Reggie Bush (2005)*
Oklahoma: Baker Mayfield (2017) and Kyler Murray (2018)
Alabama: DeVonta Smith (2020) and Bryce Young (2021)
(*Bush's award was vacated in 2010)
Young is the 18th quarterback to take home the Heisman since 2000, and extends a streak of Heisman winners to advance to the College Football Playoff to a fifth season.
The Tide quarterback is the 87th player to have his name called as the winner in the 88 times the Heisman has been awarded since 1935 -- Archie Griffin remains the only two-time winner. Young is just the fifth sophomore to win the award, joining Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, Mark Ingram, and Lamar Jackson, and will be back at Alabama in 2022 with a chance to potentially join Griffin on that exclusive list.
Let's take a look at all of the Heisman winners from Young in 2021 all the way back to Chicago's Jay Berwanger in 1935.
