Top J.D. Martinez News

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Stays hot against Oakland

Martinez went 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and two runs in Wednesday's 10-1 win over the Athletics.

Even after slugging three long balls in his previous four games, Martinez is sitting on a somewhat suppressed total of eight home runs on the season, but fantasy managers have little reason to otherwise complain about the 34-year-old. Martinez, Rafael Devers and Xander Bogaerts have formed arguably the most fearsome trio of hitters in the majors this season, with all taking batting averages north of .330 and on-base averages above .370 into Thursday's series finale. Martinez will serve as Boston's designated hitter and No. 3 batter Thursday, per Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Homers again in win

Martinez went 1-for-4 with solo home run and a walk during Tuesday's 6-1 win over the Athletics.

The veteran slugger had five homers through his first 50 appearances of the season, but he's found his power stroke of late with three long balls across his four games. Martinez ranks third in the league with a .345 batting average to go along with 22 doubles, 27 RBI and 36 runs scored.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Clubs homer in win

Martinez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in Friday's 4-3 win over the Mariners.

Martinez went yard in the third inning off Mariners starter Marco Gonzales. In the seventh, Martinez hit into a double play that yielded the Red Sox's last run, though he's not credited with an RBI on that play. He's been solid in June, going 9-for-32 (.281) in his last eight games. The 34-year-old's homer Friday was his first since May 17 and his sixth of the year. He's added a .349/.415/.552 slash line, 24 RBI, 34 runs scored and 21 doubles through 49 contests.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Out of Sunday's lineup

Martinez is not in Sunday's lineup against the Athletics, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

Martinez is hitting .308 with zero home runs and 10 runs scored over his last 10 games. Jarren Duran, who may be up only while Jackie Bradley is on the paternity list, is getting the start at designated hitter.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Crosses plate three times Thursday

Martinez went 3-for-5 with a walk and three runs scored in Thursday's 16-7 win over the White Sox.

There were many hitting stars in the game, overshadowing Martinez, but the Red Sox's designated hitter is ridiculously hot right now. Through 22 games in May, he's slashing .443/.485/.670 with four home runs, 13 RBI and 20 runs scored. It helps that the rest of lineup around him is also producing, so there are no easy spots at the top of the order. Martinez wakes up Friday as the MLB leader in batting average (.380) and is third with a 197 wRC+, behind only Mike Trout and Aaron Judge.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Not in lineup for night game

Martinez will not start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

Martinez went 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in the first game of the day. Even though he merely served as the designated hitter, the Red Sox evidently don't want him playing 18 innings in one day. Franchy Cordero will fill that spot in his absence, with Bobby Dalbec starting at first base.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Four hits in return

Martinez went 4-for-5 with a double, three runs, an RBI and a walk in Tuesday's 16-3 win over the White Sox.

Following a two-game absence with back spasms, Martinez returned in spectacular fashion Tuesday. He walked and scored in the first inning before later adding three hits -- including a double -- while scoring twice more and driving in a run. Martinez now has two four-hit efforts in his last four contests, going a ridiculous 11-for-17 with three doubles, eight runs and an RBI in those contests. After batting a respectable .278 over 54 at-bats in April, the 34-year-old has been red-hot in May, producing a .425 average with 12 extra-base hits, 16 runs and 13 RBI in 80 at-bats during the month.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Back in action

Martinez (back) will return to the lineup Tuesday against the White Sox, batting third while serving as the designated hitter, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.

Martinez was scratched Sunday against Seattle due to back spasms, but the issue was evidently fairly minor, as he's good to go following Monday's scheduled off day. That's great news for the Red Sox, as Martinez is off to an excellent start at the plate this season, hitting .349/.390/.581.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Scratched with back spasms

Martinez was scratched from the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners due to back spasms, Chad Jennings of The Athletic reports.

Martinez was slated to start Sunday before being scratched a few minutes before first pitch. The severity of the injury is unclear, but he'll have Monday's scheduled off day to be evaluated before potentially missing additional time. Christian Arroyo will serve as Boston's designated hitter in his place.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Tallies four hits, three runs

Martinez went 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored Thursday against the Mariners.

Martinez benefitted from a big offensive performance by the Red Sox -- and Trevor Story in particular -- to score multiple runs for the third time this season. It also marked his third multi-hit effort in his last four starts, during which he's hit one home run while driving in four and scoring five runs. Overall, Martinez has a .344/.383/.582 line across 133 plate appearances on the campaign.

Martinez went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 13-4 loss to the Astros.

Martinez launched his fifth home run of the season in the fifth inning, but by that time, the Red Sox were down by 10 runs. The DH extended his batting streak to 19 games, during which Martinez has gone 29-for-75 (.387) with four home runs, nine doubles, 13 RBI and nine runs scored.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Keeps streaks alive

Martinez went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double and two runs scored in Friday's 7-1 win over the Rangers.

Martinez's sixth-inning single extended a hitting streak to 15 consecutive games and a season-long on-base streak to 25. He's shown no sign of slowing down at age 34, posting a slash of .306/.349/.510 with 14 extra-base hits, 15 RBI and 12 runs scored over 106 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Goes yard again

Martinez went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Angels.

Martinez launched an eighth-inning bomb over the wall in left for his third homer and second in as many games. He's dealt with a nagging groin injury, which no longer appears to be bothersome. Boston's designated hitter is 5-for-9 with five RBI over the last two games.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Clubs late grand slam

Martinez went 3-for-5 with a grand slam during Sunday's 9-5 loss to the Orioles.

Martinez missed the past three games with adductor discomfort, but he returned to the lineup with a bang Sunday. The veteran slugger was already 2-for-4 on the day with the Red Sox trailing by eight runs in the ninth inning, and he came through with a 364-foot homer to right with the bases juiced to make the final score more respectable. The fact Martinez wasn't subbed out in the midst of a blowout is an encouraging sign for the injury, so he should be back in the lineup Tuesday following Boston's scheduled day off Monday.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Returns from three-game absence

Martinez (groin) will serve as the Red Sox's designated hitter and cleanup batter in Sunday's game against the Orioles, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Adductor discomfort has relegated Martinez to the bench for each of Boston's last three games, but he'll make his way back into the starting nine for the series finale in Baltimore after showing improvement while he was idle. Christian Arroyo -- who had served as Boston's DH for both of the previous two contests -- will head back to the bench to make room in the lineup for Martinez.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Expected to start Sunday

Manager Alex Cora expects Martinez (groin) to start Sunday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Martinez was scratched from the lineup for Saturday's game, but Cora's comments -- and the fact Martinez will be available to pinch hit Saturday -- suggest that was only a precautionary measure.

  • Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Scratched from Saturday's lineup

Martinez (groin) was scratched from Saturday's lineup against the Orioles, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Martinez was initially slated to return from a two-game absence Saturday, but he's apparently still dealing with his adductor injury. It's not yet clear whether he'll be available off the bench, but Christian Arroyo will step in as the designated hitter and bat sixth.
