Chargers' Derwin James: Sensational season
James finished the 2022-23 season with 115 tackles (64 solo), four sacks, an additional tackle for loss, two interceptions and two forced fumbles in 14 games.
James had another phenomenal season, as he led the Chargers in forced fumbles and recorded the second-most tackles. The Pro Bowl safety also had the most sacks of his career, and he wasn't as hampered by injuries as in prior seasons. Assuming he stays healthy, James should be expected to produce at a high level once again in 2023, in addition to during the upcoming postseason.

Chargers' Derwin James: Good to go for Week 18
James doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's matchup against the Broncos, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
James was sidelined for Week 17 due to a concussion he suffered in Week 16, but he's been a full participant Wednesday through Friday and will be good to go for Week 18. Across 13 appearances, the fourth-year safety has totaled 109 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.

Chargers' Derwin James: Practicing in full
James (concussion) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
James suffered a concussion during Week 16's win over Indianapolis, and the Chargers haven't yet announced whether he's cleared the league's five-step protocol. The 26-year-old's chances of suiting up for Sunday's road matchup against the Broncos will depend on his gaining full clearance.

Chargers' Derwin James: Trending in right direction
James (concussion) logged a limited practice Thursday.
James logged a DNP on Wednesday, as he is still recovering from the concussion suffered in Monday's win over the Colts. Even though he was able to take the field Thursday, it does not necessarily mean that the five-year pro has cleared the league's concussion protocols. However, it does appear he is trending in the right direction, and the 26-year-old still has three more days to gain clearance to play Sunday against the Rams.

Chargers' Derwin James: Won't play versus Rams
James (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's game versus the Rams.
James sustained a concussion during the Week 16 win over Indianapolis on Monday Night Football, leaving him sidelined during practice Wednesday. The 26-year-old then logged consecutive limited sessions Thursday and Friday, though it appears he'll need some additional time to clear protocols. In his stead, expect Alohi Gilman to step back into a starting role at strong safety, as he previously played every defensive snap when James was sidelined with a quadriceps injury for back-to-back games ahead of Week 16. James has been the Chargers' best defensive player when healthy this season, so it will be worth monitoring his status heading into the regular-season finale versus Denver on Sunday, Jan. 8.

Chargers' Derwin James: Sits out Wednesday's practice
James (concussion) was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday's estimated practice report.
James, who sustained a concussion on the same play in which he was ejected for lowering his helmet on a second-quarter tackle in Monday's win over the Colts, remains in the protocol as the Chargers being Week 17 prep. He still has until Sunday's game against the Rams to clear the NFL's five-step protocol, but unless he returns to practice by Friday as at least a limited participant, he likely won't be available to play.

Chargers' Derwin James: In concussion protocol
Chargers head coach Brandon Staley confirmed after Monday's 20-3 win over the Colts that James has entered the concussion protocol, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
The Pro Bowl safety recorded an interception in the first quarter, but James' night ended early when he drew a targeting penalty and an immediate ejection on a second-quarter tackle. James suffered a head injury on the same play and will now need to clear the five-step protocol in order to be eligible to play this Sunday against the Rams. James previously missed the past two games with a quadriceps injury.
