Panthers' P.J. Walker: Completes first NFL season
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker finished the 2020 season with 32 completions on 56 attempts for 368 passing yards, one touchdown and five interceptions in four games played.

Walker, after a successful spell in the XFL, reunited with his college coach Matt Rhule in Carolina last offseason. In his first NFL campaign, the 25-year-old served as Teddy Bridgewater's backup, but got to start with the veteran sidelined in Week 11 versus the Lions. Walker finished with 258 passing yards, a touchdown and two interceptions while leading the Panthers to a 20-0 victory. While that performance supplanted his status as a capable second option, Walker didn't fare as well in relief of an injured Bridgewater in Week 17 versus the Saints, completing just five of 14 attempts for 95 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. Although he remains under contract for next season, Walker's job could be in jeopardy if Carolina opts to sign or draft another quarterback to go with Bridgewater in 2021.

Panthers' P.J. Walker: Returning to backup role
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker is slated to move into a reserve role with Teddy Bridgewater (knee) on track to start Sunday's game in Minnesota, David Newton of reports.

Walker received his first NFL start over Will Grier last week against the Lions when Bridgewater was inactive due to an MCL sprain. The fourth-year pro essentially acted as a game manager while Carolina rolled to a 20-0 win, completing 24 of 34 passes for 258 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. With Bridgewater beginning Week 12 as a full practice participant, he looks like he'll be ready to reclaim starting duties Sunday, but Walker should stick ahead of Grier as the No. 2 quarterback.

Panthers' P.J. Walker: Holds own in Week 11 start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker completed 24 of 34 passes for 258 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the Panthers' 20-0 win over the Lions on Sunday. He also netted minus-2 yards on five rushes, and he fumbled once but recovered.

Making what could be termed a quasi-last-minute spot start for Teddy Bridgewater (knee) -- whose status was in doubt until pregame warmups -- Walker acquitted himself very well overall in his first NFL opportunity to open a game under center. The former XFL star displayed impressive accuracy even while keeping his targets limited to just four pass catchers overall. However, three of those were the top wideout trio of DJ Moore, Curtis Samuel and Robby Anderson, who Walker hit for at least one double-digit completion apiece, including a nifty 17-yard touchdown toss to Samuel. Carolina's defense also played its best game of the season by far, helping support the inexperienced signal-caller with its play. Bridgewater reportedly is likely to return for a Week 12 road matchup versus the Vikings, but even if this turns out to be Walker's only start, he undoubtedly picked up some valuable experience and proved he's capable of stepping in should the former go down again at any point.

Panthers' P.J. Walker: Gets Week 11 start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker will receive the start at quarterback Sunday against Detroit, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Walker came on in relief in last week's loss to the Buccaneers after Teddy Bridgewater exited with an MCL sprain in his right knee. Though the Panthers were hopeful Bridgewater would be ready to go for the Week 11 matchup, Carolina ultimately made their top signal-caller inactive for the first time this season. Coach Matt Rhule will award Walker the start over Will Grier after both players saw action with the first-team offense in practice this week, so Walker may have a short leash if he struggles to find a rhythm early on in Sunday's contest. Over his limited action behind Bridgewater this season, the former XFL standout has completed three of eight attempts for 15 yards.

Panthers' P.J. Walker: Competing for No. 2 role
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Matt Rhule said Wednesday that Walker and Will Grier will receive equal reps in practice this week before the Panthers settle on a clear No. 2 quarterback, Alaina Getzenberg of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Walker served as the top backup last weekend in the Panthers' blowout loss to the Buccaneers, and he ended up seeing action after Teddy Bridgewater exited with an MCL sprain in his right knee. The former XFL star struggled in limited action against a tough Tampa Bay defense, completing just two of four passes for 12 yards. Though the Panthers are hopeful Bridgewater will be ready to play Week 11 against the Lions, the backup competition between Walker or Grier will need to be monitored closely in the event Bridgewater's status remains in question heading into Sunday's contest.

Panthers' P.J. Walker: Forced into action
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker replaced the injured Teddy Bridgewater (knee) in the fourth quarter and completed two of four passes for 12 yards in Sunday's 46-23 loss to the Buccaneers.

Walker was forced into the fray after Bridgewater was sacked on a third-down play with just over five minutes left in Sunday's contest. With Bridgewater unable to continue, Walker conducted an unsuccessful fourth-down attempt before leading the Panthers on their final offensive drive, which ended in a punt. After the game, it was revealed Bridgewater would undergo an MRI on his knee to determine the extent of his issue. Although some reports suggest the injury isn't believed to be overly serious, if Bridgewater is slowed at all, Walker and Will Grier would figure to command more snaps in the buildup to Week 11's game against the Lions.

Panthers' P.J. Walker: Inactive for Week 9
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker (coach's decision) won't suit up in Sunday's game against the Chiefs, David Newton of ESPN reports.

Walker had handled backup duties for the past three games behind Teddy Bridgewater, even seeing action in Week 8 after Bridgewater got hurt. Part of the reason Walker was active was his flexibility to play running back and receiver while Christian McCaffrey was hurt. Now that CMC is back in the lineup, Walker will shift backup duties to Will Grier for Sunday's contest.

Walker will back up Teddy Bridgewater in Sunday's game against the Saints, Myles Simmons of the Panthers' official site reports.

Walker has usurped second-year pro Will Grier, who is inactive Sunday, as the No. 2 quarterback for Carolina. The former XFL star has yet to make his NFL debut, but he could be deployed if Bridgewater suffers an injury.

Panthers' P.J. Walker: Inactive against Raiders
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker (coach's decision) is inactive for the team's Week 1 contest against the Raiders, Myles Simmons of the Panthers' official site reports.

Walker was battling Will Grier for the backup quarterback job throughout training camp. Though Walker did enough to earn a spot on the roster, Grier beat him out serve as the backup quarterback in Week 1 against the Raiders.

Panthers' P.J. Walker: Battling for backup role
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker remains locked in a battle with Will Grier for the Panthers' backup job, David Newton of reports.

While Teddy Bridgewater is locked into the starting role, the backup job is still being contested. Walker started strong in the XFL for the Houston Roughnecks before the season was cancelled, posting 15 touchdowns and helping lead his team to a 5-0 record to begin the season. The 25-year-old has never played in a regular-season NFL game, however, and he could have a difficult time vaulting Grier since the team invested a 2019 third-round pick in the West Virginia product. It's unclear if the team will keep three quarterbacks on the roster or utilize the extra roster spot on a different position.

Panthers' P.J. Walker: Joins crowded QB room in Carolina
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker is signing with the Panthers, Dianna Russini of ESPN reports.

Walker was well on his way to MVP honors in the XFL, posting a 15:4 TD:INT while leading the Houston Roughnecks to a 5-0 record. He previously spent time with the Colts' practice squad from 2017 to 2019, never quite making it to the active roster for a regular-season game. The 25-year-old now joins a crowded QB room in Carolina, where Teddy Bridgewater, Cam Newton (foot), Will Grier (foot) and Kyle Allen all have spots on the roster. Newton likely will be cut or traded soon enough, leaving Walker to duke it out with Grier and Allen for one or two roster spots behind Bridgewater. The XFL star may have been swayed by the chance to reunite with Panthers coach Matt Rhule, who was the head coach at Temple for each of Walker's four collegiate seasons.

P.J. Walker: Generating NFL interest
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Seahawks, Cardinals and Broncos have all contacted the XFL's Houston Roughnecks to ask about Walker, Mark Berman of FOX 26 reports.

Walker and wide receiver Cam Phillips were the big stars of the XFL, leading Houston to a 5-0 record before the rest of the season was suspended. Walker led the league in passing yards (1,338) and touchdowns (15), completing 64.7 percent of his throws while tossing just four interceptions. He previously spent time with the Colts' practice squad in 2017, 2018 and 2019, never quite managing to secure the No. 2 quarterback job. It sounds like it won't be long before he gets another shot in the NFL.

Phillip Walker: Remains with Indy
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker signed with the Colts' practice squad Sunday, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports.

Walker was waived Saturday after a rough preseason in which he completed 32 of 64 passes for 349 yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions. The 24-year-old was moved on and off the practice squad throughout the 2018 season.

Phillip Walker: Cut by Colts
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker was cut by the Colts on Saturday, Jim Ayello of the Indianapolis Star reports.

Walker was unable to capitalize on the opportunity of securing the roster spot opened up by Andrew Luck's abrupt retirement, completing only 50 percent of his passes this preseason. With Chad Kelly suspended for the first two games of the regular season, it seems increasingly likely the Colts will acquire another quarterback before Week 1 to back up starter Jacoby Brissett.

Colts' Phillip Walker: Struggles in preseason finale
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker completed eight of 16 passes for 90 yards and added 10 yards on three rushing attempts in Thursday's preseason finale against the Bengals.

Walker was outplayed by Chad Kelly, who also got the start in this one. While it appears Walker will be relegated to a third-string role when Kelly returns from his two-game suspension, Walker should open the season as Jacoby Brissett's backup while Kelly sits out the first two weeks. However, the Colts may try to acquire a veteran backup before Week 1 with Walker's mediocre preseason performance.

Colts' Phillip Walker: Struggles again Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker was 6-of-13 passing for 65 yards with an interception and also lost a fumble in Saturday's preseason loss to Chicago.

Walker struggled Saturday and hasn't been impressive this preseason. It was notable that Chad Kelly got the start Saturday with Jacoby Brissett sitting out as Walker may have fallen to third string. With Kelly suspended the first two games, Walker will likely be Indy's backup quarterback with the surprise retirement of Andrew Luck. However, the Colts could be in the market to boost their quarterback depth with the news of Luck's retirement, so Walker's spot on the roster could be in jeopardy.

Colts' Phillip Walker: Improves in second preseason game
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker was 10-of-17 passing for 109 yards with no interceptions or touchdowns in Saturday's preseason loss to Cleveland.

Walker improved from his subpar first preseason game, but he was outperformed by Chad Kelly again in the battle for the third-QB role. However, with Kelly set to miss the first two games of the regular season due to a suspension, Walker could begin the season as the third quarterback. The Colts may keep a third quarterback on the roster, which they usually don't do, given Andrew Luck's questionable status for the start of the season due to ankle and calf injuries.

Colts' Phillip Walker: Struggles in preseason opener
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker completed eight of 18 passes for 85 yards with an interception in Thursday's preseason loss at Buffalo.

Walker is battling Chad Kelly for the No. 3 QB role, and after one game, he was outplayed by Kelly. The Colts usually don't keep a third quarterback on the active roster, but that could change with Andrew Luck's lingering calf injury.

Walker signed with Indianapolis' practice squad Friday.

Walker now begins his fifth stint with the Colts' practice squad. The 23-year-old quarterback will serve as an emergency option behind starter Andrew Luck and backup Jacoby Brissett.

Phillip Walker: Let go from practice squad
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker was released from the Colts' practice squad Wednesday.

This marks the end of Walker's fourth stint with the Colts' practice squad. With Andrew Luck enjoying solid health this season and Jacoby Brissett locked in as the backup, Walker was primarily thought of as an emergency option. Walker could find his way back to the Colts' practice squad if the team promotes other members to the active roster at a later time.
