College football scores, rankings, highlights: No. 8 LSU rolls over rival, No. 9 Iowa State stays unbeaten

Week 8 of the 2024 college football season provided two marquee clashes in the SEC that will have lasting impacts on the wide-open College Football Playoff race.

While Tennessee and Georgia both took care of business to separate themselves from the pack, No. 8 LSU continued its hot streak with a 34-10 win over Arkansas on the road. The Tigers have won six consecutive games dating back to a Week 1 loss to USC in Las Vegas. Freshman running back Caden Durham continues to be a spark plug for LSU, rushing for 101 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

The Tigers racked up nearly 400 yards of total offense and cruised to victory ahead of marquee showdowns against No. 14 Texas A&M and No. 7 Alabama in the coming weeks.

No. 12 Notre Dame took care of business in Atlanta with a 31-13 win over Georgia Tech to move to 6-1. Irish quarterback Riley Leonard completed 20 of 29 attempts for 203 yards and ran 10 times for 51 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

In the late window, Iowa State survived an upset bid over UCF with a 38-35 win at home. Cyclones quarterback Rocco Becht ran for a 1-yard touchdown with 30 seconds left to seal the comeback win over the Knights. Iowa State and BYU are the only teams from the Big 12 that have yet to lose a game in conference play.

CBS Sports will be here every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the evening.

Wild sequence of events in Austin

Texas fans at Darrell K. Royal-Memorial Stadium littered the field with bottles and cans after a controversial call initially went against the Longhorns in the third quarter of their showdown with Georgia on Saturday night.

The call in question was a pass interference penalty that appeared to negate a key interception from Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron with three minutes remaining the third quarter.

After a delay for the field to be cleared of the debris, officials reversed the call and let the interception stand. Texas scored a touchdown moments later to cut its deficit to 23-15.

Don't worry…

Don't worry, UCF promptly scored a touchdown after this. The Golden Knights got possession on Iowa State's 1-yard line and punched it in to take a 35-27 lead. The Cyclones have their backs against the wall now as they look to remain unbeaten and in the AP top 10.

Late-night action

Utah is hosting TCU in a Big 12 battle that is just about to begin. It was only 19 months ago when TCU, just two decades removed from being a member of the Western Athletic Conference, knocked off Michigan to reach the national championship game. But that momentum is gone. Is there any room for optimism moving forward?

Winners and Losers from the day

Week 8 of the college football season transformed itself into a prove-it Saturday as key contenders either established themselves or crumbled under the pressure. For No. 16 Indiana, it was dropping a hammer on Nebraska to thrust itself into the College Football Playoff picture. No. 11 Tennessee also gets back into the mix after outlasting No. 7 Alabama in Neyland Stadium. Here are the winners and losers from the day's first two windows.

Could Michigan miss a bowl?

No. 24 Michigan dropped to 4-3 on Saturday with a 21-7 loss to No. 22 Illinois, becoming the second reigning national champion in the last 30 years to lose three of its first seven games the following season after a title win. Entering the 2024 campaign, the Wolverines had lost three games total in their last three seasons under former coach Jim Harbaugh, and now they find themselves on the cusp of possibly missing a bowl game with a tough slate ahead.

Clemson, Miami owning ACC title race

The two teams atop the ACC standings and the league's two highest-ranked teams in the AP Top 25 poll were both in action in the early window on Saturday, and each able to maintain that position despite very different wins. No. 6 Miami traded blows with Louisville in a 52-45 shootout on the road, while No. 10 Clemson rode a strong second half to a double-digit victory against Virginia at home. But despite the difference in wins, a key connector in the two is the main reason both teams are at the center of the ACC title picture and very much in the College Football Playoff conversation.

Texas turns to Arch Manning

Texas quarterback Arch Manning has entered the game for the No. 1 Longhorns as they face a 20-0 deficit against No. 5 Georgia. Manning, a former No. 1 overall recruit, started and won two games for the Longhorns this season as starter Quinn Ewers recovered from injury. The Texas offense has been a disaster early, mustering only 15 total yards on 23 plays in the middle of the second quarter. Ewers has been sacked three times behind the heralded Texas offensive line, leaving the Longhorns with negative yards rushing.

Unbeaten Iowa State in a battle

Late 2Q: Iowa State 14, UCF 14

UCF has been feasting on the ground in the first half with 213 yards rushing late in the second quarter. Iowa State has responded with a heavy dose of Carson Hansen, who has two rushing touchdowns of his own. However, the Cyclones have gone three-and-out on three straight possessions. This is a Big 12 battle for unbeaten Iowa State.

Arkansas needs big second half

Start 3Q: LSU 16, Arkansas 7

Arkansas needs a second half rally if it's going to take down another top-10 team at home. LSU controlled the time of possession in the first half -- nearly doubling up the Razorbacks -- with a series of long scoring drives. The Razorbacks did well to hold LSU to a trio of field goals but shot themselves in the foot offensively with a missed field goal and a fumble.

Bulldogs are barking against Texas

Mid 2Q: No. 5 Georgia 17, No. 1 Texas 0

Turns out it's never smart to count Georgia out. The Bulldogs have come out firing on (most) cylinders against Texas. The offense got off to a slow start when quarterback Carson Beck threw two interceptions. But the defense has absolutely locked things down all game, and the offense has come alive to score on three consecutive drives. Georgia just turned an interception into a 15-yard rushing touchdown from running back Trevor Etienne Jr.

'College football needs an Iowa State right now'

Don't get Jamie Pollard started. Iowa State's veteran athletic director is damn proud that his football program is one of only 11 undefeated FBS teams at the halfway point of the 2024 season. So much so that Cyclone football isn't just on a heater, Pollard believes Iowa State is setting an example. "I think college football needs an Iowa State right now," Pollard said, "because we're exhibit A about opportunity and the chance to play your way in."

Texas vs. Georgia preview

No. 1 Texas hosts No. 5 Georgia in a heavyweight battle at Darrell K. Royal Stadium in Austin, Texas. The primetime matchup is the highest-ranked battle at DKR since 2006. One week ago, Texas held rival Oklahoma without a single touchdown in a 34-3 decimation in the Red River Rivalry. The Longhorns are undefeated with wins over the blue-blood Sooners and Michigan and are currently the favorite on sports betting apps to win the national title with +350 odds, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

LSU vs. Arkansas preview

No. 8 LSU travels to face Arkansas Saturday evening in one of the SEC's most fascinating clashes during a loaded Week 8 slate. The Tigers are coming off a huge win against Ole Miss, which served as a tremendous boon for their College Football Playoff hopes (the Tigers are currently getting +135 betting odds to make the CFP, according to Fanatics Sportsbook), while the Razorbacks had a bye to prepare for one of their top conference rivals. Arkansas has already beaten one top-10 foe at home this season. Can the Hogs claim another victim?

Colorado in control at halftime

HALF: Colorado 28, Arizona 7

Colorado has looked impressive through the first 30 minutes against Arizona. Colorado star quarterback Shedeur Sanders is 15 of 21 for 173 yards and has three total touchdowns. Colorado's defense has held Arizona to 143 yards of total offense and limited star WR Tetairoa McMillan to just two catches for 15 yards. This has been a great response from Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes after a loss to Kansas State last weekend at home.

Illinois leading vs. Michigan

3Q: No. 22 Illinois 13, No. 24 Michigan 7

Illinois has a lead in the third quarter against Michigan thanks to a strong showing from quarterback Luke Altmyer. The junior leads the Illini with 68 yards through the air and 47 on the ground as Illinois hopes to knock off Michigan for the first time since 2009. Michigan quarterback Jack Tuttle has struggled to find consistent offense, throwing for only 45 yards on 10 attempts. Running back Kalel Mullings has the game's only points for Michigan.

Third Saturday in October one to forget

HALF: No. 7 Alabama 7, No. 11 Tennessee 0

Tennessee was held scoreless in the first half for the third straight game as Alabama took a narrow one-score lead into halftime at Neyland Stadium. Jalen Milroe's connection with Ryan Williams for a touchdown has been the only difference as both teams failed to clear 50 yards on the ground.

Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava had to leave the game and enter the tent after appearing to hit his head on the ground, but he returned to the game. Still, he is sitting at 100 yards on 7-of-14 completion. Iamaleava has not cleared 200 yards through the air since Week 2.

Baylor jumps on Texas Tech

2Q: Baylor 17, Texas Tech 0

This matchup features first-place Texas Tech against last-place Baylor, but the Bears have taken advantage of big plays to take an early lead. Running back Bryson Washington broke away for a 44-yard rush to the edge of the end zone before punching it in. Similarly, returner Josh Cameron got stopped at the one-yard line on a punt return and Washington converted one play later.

The win would be a much-needed positive moment for Baylor, which has started 2-4 and 0-3 in conference play. To the contrary, it would be a frustrating break for Texas Tech, which has clawed its way back into Big 12 contention following a slow 1-1 start.

Buffs rolling early

1Q: Colorado 14, Arizona 0

Colorado is dominating Arizona early in the first quarter behind a hot start from quarterback Shedeur Sanders. The Buffs defense forced a three-and-out on the opening Arizona possession and were able to quickly leverage their first two chances into touchdowns. Sanders has hit on all five of his attempts for 71 yards, including a shovel pass to Drelon Miller for a score.

Missouri pulls one from the fire

Final: Missouri 21, Auburn 17

Missouri trailed 17-3 in the third quarter and was banged up. But quarterback Brady Cook returned from injury and led a 17-play 95-yard touchdown drive to lift the Tigers to a comeback victory. Jamal Roberts capped the drive on a touchdown run with 46 second remaining. Auburn fell to 2-5 (0-4 SEC) with the loss as its offense sputtered down the stretch. It wasn't pretty, but this was a win Missouri desperately needed, and it found a way.

Michigan vs. Illinois preview

After a thrilling 50-49 overtime win against Purdue last week, No. 22 Illinois must refocus quickly as the Illini welcome No. 24 Michigan for a Big Ten showdown on CBS. The Wolverines are coming off a bye week and looking to tackle a challenging second half of their schedule in style. The game will be the first between ranked teams at Illinois' Memorial Stadium since 2000, and it's the second sellout of the season for the Illini. That should equate to a charged atmosphere as Illinois and Michigan square off in the day's only matchup between ranked Big Ten teams.

To the wire in Louisville

4Q: Miami 38, Louisville 38

Louisville cashed in a fake punt with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Shough to Duke Watson, tying a barnburner with Miami at 38 with 13:22 remaining. Miami has been living life on the edge in recent weeks, and the unbeaten 'Canes are in another ACC dogfight coming down the stretch. The quarterbacks have combined for seven touchdown passes with no interceptions. Now, it's Cam Ward's turn.

Cook returns, gives Missouri a spark

Early 4Q: Auburn 17, Missouri 14

Missouri quarterback Brady Cook exited Saturday's Week 8 game against Auburn with an apparent ankle injury but returned in the second half to try to spark a comeback. Initially hobbled early in the first quarter, Cook slipped on the turf three plays after getting up slow from a sack, and he remained on the turf for some time. But with his ankle taped, he returned in the third quarter with Missouri down 17-6.

Cook immediately led Missouri on its first touchdown drive of the game, connecting with wide receiver Mookie Cooper for a gain of 78 yards on third-and-10 near the third quarter. Marcus Carroll finished the possession with a 2-yard rushing score one play later, and Cook rushed for a successful 2-point conversion to cut Auburn's lead to 17-14.

Statement showing for Indiana

Early 4Q: Indiana 42, Nebraska 7

Indiana has built an insurmountable lead on Nebraska by dominating in all phases of the game. Shawn Asbury highlighted a big third quarter for the Hoosiers wit a 78-yard interception return to set up a touchdown that gave IU a 35-7 lead. The play effectively led to a 14-point swing and left the Cornhuskers with a massive deficit. One storyline to watch for the Hoosiers, however, is the health of quarterback Kurtis Rourke, who left the game with a hand injury.

Louisville and Miami in a boxing match

Early 3Q: No. 6 Miami 31, Louisville 24

Louisville's game against Miami is entering peak silly territory. Miami opened the second half with a 14-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that took almost seven minutes off the clock to take a 31-17 lead. The Cardinals answered immediately with a 100-yard touchdown on the ensuing kickoff, courtesy of wide receiver Caullin Lacy. And then Louisville's defense, on short rest, forced a fumble deep in Miami territory that the Cardinals were able to jump on. An absolute carnival ride, and it's glorious.

Clemson hits the gas

Late 3Q: Clemson 31, Virginia 10

Clemson's offensive resurgence has continued today against Virignia. The Tigers scored on touchdown drives of 90 and 68 yards to begin the second half. The star has been Antonio Williams, who has a 36-yard rushing touchdown, three receptions for 44 yards and a completion for 34 yards. The Tigers have also been salty defensively, forcing four straight Virginia punts over the second and third quarters.

Disastrous day for Mizzou continues

3Q: Auburn 17, Missouri 3

Missouri star receiver Luther Burden has been quiet in the pass game today and just mad a catastrophic special teams error. He was attempting to return a punt from inside the Missouri 20-yard line but couldn't corral it. The ball went shooting toward the end zone, and an Auburn player fell on it to give the Tigers a 17-3 lead. Mizzou is navigating this game without quarterback Brady Cook or star running back Nate Noel, both of whom were injured in the fist half. That will make a comeback all the more difficult.

Coleman sparks Auburn

Early 3Q: Auburn 10, Missouri 3

Auburn desperately needed a spark against Missouri after a lackluster offensive first half. The Tigers got just that chance by opening the second half with the ball. They marched to Missouri's 47-yard line, where quarterback Payton Thorne -- who exited briefly earlier in the drive with an apparent injury -- uncorked a deep ball to freshman wide receiver Cam Coleman. Coleman hauled it in well beyond Missouri's secondary and trotted into the end zone for the biggest play of the day.

Miami in a battle with Louisville

Half: Miami 24, Louisville 17

Miami star quarterback Cam Ward completed 9 of 15 passes for 143 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the first half as the Hurricanes opened up a 24-17 lead on Louisville. The Cardinals committed a catastrophic fumble while pinned deep in their own territory. Simeon Barrow forced it for Miami, and Raul Aguirre Jr. fell on it to give the Hurricanes a 10-point edge. However, Louisville rebounded with a quick-strike drive just before the half to set up a 22-yard field goal as the second quarter ended.
