A look at what's making Labor Day headlines in the SEC:

  • Mississippi State enters the week wanting payback against Auburn. The Bulldogs have lost heartbreakers to the Tigers the past two years -- 17-14 in 2010 and 41-34 last season. Mississippi State has dropped 12 straight conference openers, and seven of those have come against Auburn.

  • South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier wasn't happy with his team's 67 passing yards in the win over Vandy, the fewest since he took over in 2005. Part of that can be attributed to QB Connor Shaw, who left the game with a bruised shoulder before returning to lead the game-winning drive. Shaw has trouble lifting his right arm, according to Spurrier, and won't play against East Carolina unless he's healthy.

  • Missouri is doing some trash-talking heading into its much-awaited SEC opener against Georgia at sold-out Memorial Stadium in Columbia. DT Sheldon Richardson said the Bulldogs play "old-man football" and added that if the Tigers execute, "nobody in this league can touch us. Period." Georgia coach Mark Richt didn't take the bait. He merely admitted that being the visiting team for Mizzou's SEC opener "is not the best draw, but it is what it is."

  • Auburn coach Gene Chizik said his defense tackled poorly in the loss to Clemson, which rolled up 528 yards. Chizik said starting jobs remain open as Auburn begins preparation for its SEC opener against Mississippi State.

  • Has Jeff Driskel won the starting QB job at Florida? Coach Will Muschamp and OC Brent Pease met Sunday to discuss the situation, and an announcement could come as early as Monday. Driskel and Jacoby Brissett each played a quarter of the first half Saturday, then Driskel played the entire second half of Florida's 27-14 win.

  • Tennessee had multiple big plays in its season-opening 35-21 win against NC State on Friday night. Two deep passes from QB Tyler Bray beat NC State All-American CB David Amerson, but this closer look at those plays shows that perhaps Amerson thought he would have some help from a safety on one of those deep passes.

  • Vanderbilt will try to get the ball out of QB Jordan Rodgers' hand quicker when it faces Northwestern next weekend. Rodgers was sacked five times and was constantly on the run against South Carolina's deense.

  • Nobody doubts that Alabama is good, but Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggart went a little over the top praising the Tide on Monday. "If you ask me, they're going to be the next expansion team in the NFL," Taggart said. He later went on to say Alabama might give the Green Bay Packers a close game.
