After throwing 72 pitches in Game 2 on Sunday in Milwaukee, the right-hander was called upon to get the final six outs Tuesday with closer Mason Miller (paternity) away from the team. King generated just two whiffs on 40 pitches (25 strikes) and put the tying run on base in the ninth inning with a pair of walks, but a double play put a sudden end to the Brewers' rally. King was previously lined up to start a possible Game 5 on Friday and could still factor into San Diego's plans should it stave off elimination again Wednesday.

Peralta will join San Diego's NLDS roster as a temporary replacement for Mason Miller, who was placed on the postseason paternity list Tuesday. If the Padres extend the series long enough to allow Miller to return, Peralta would be forced back off the roster.

Miller will be permitted to spend no more than three days away from the team while he welcomes a new addition to his family, and he'll be allowed to rejoin the active roster immediately upon returning if San Diego is able to extend the series. In the meantime, the Padres will add Wandy Peralta to their NLDS roster to replace Miller in the bullpen.

Padres' Gavin Sheets: Late scratch Tuesday

Sheets was scratched from the lineup for Game 3 of the NLDS against Milwaukee on Tuesday due to neck stiffness.
Sheets will step out of the starting nine Tuesday as he tends to his neck but will be available off the bench, suggesting that his injury isn't serious. Samad Taylor will fill in as San Diego's designated hitter and bat eighth.
Campusano is not in the lineup Tuesday for Game 3 of the NLDS versus the Brewers.
Campusano started at designated hitter in Game 1 and at catcher in Game 2, reaching base twice in both contests. However, he will begin Tuesday's festivities on the bench. The Padres will roll out Ethan Salas at catcher and Gavin Sheets at DH as they try to stave off elimination.
The Padres removed Vasquez from their NLDS roster Monday.
Vasquez was added to the roster as a replacement for Walker Buehler (personal), who was on paternity leave. With Buehler back in tow, Vasquez will exit the roster. Vasquez did not make an appearance during the first two games of the series.

The Padres activated Buehler from the paternity list Monday.
Buehler was away for the first two games of the series but will be back on the roster as the series shifts to San Diego for Game 3 on Tuesday. The veteran right-hander is a candidate to start Game 4, if needed. Buehler logged a 4.63 ERA and 131:57 K:BB over 153.2 innings covering 32 starts this season for the Padres.
King didn't factor into the decision in Game 2 of the NLDS versus the Brewers on Sunday. He struck out six, allowing one run on three hits and no walks over five-plus innings.
After carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning during his wild-card start against the Cubs on Tuesday, King continued that dominance Sunday by retiring the first 14 batters he faced. Christian Yelich broke the seal with a two-out double in the fifth frame, which was followed by two additional singles and Milwaukee's first run. King escaped that inning without further damage but was pulled after a hit-by-pitch to begin the sixth. The right-hander has surrendered just one run on four hits with a 14:3 K:BB across 12 innings through his first two postseason starts. If San Diego can win the next two contests to force a decisive Game 5, King tentatively lines up to start on regular rest.

Miller was charged with the loss and a blown save in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Brewers on Sunday. He gave up two runs on a hit and three walks with two strikeouts over 1.2 innings.
Padres manager Craig Stammen called on his closer for a six-out save in Game 2, and Miller hit the ground running with a clean eighth inning that included two punchouts. The right-hander started the ninth by inducing a groundout, but his command wavered from there as he walked three of the next four batters to set up Jackson Chourio for a walk-off, two-run single. Miller had two six-out appearances in 66 outings during the regular season but was unable to close things out Sunday. Milwaukee forced him to throw 40 pitches, which was his highest workload since 2023 with the A's. His availability would likely be in question for Tuesday's Game 3 were it not the playoffs, but it'll likely be all-hands-on-deck situation with San Diego facing elimination.
