  • Bengals' Jessie Bates: First double-digit tackle outing

Bates recorded 10 tackles (four solo) in Monday's 32-13 defeat against the Browns.

While Bates finished as the Bengals' leading tackler in this blowout loss, the safety's production so far in 2022 has severely lacked compared to his previous four seasons, as he's recorded just 36 tackles (24 solo), two passes defended and an interception over eight games. Bates will look to repeat this prolific performance against the Panthers this coming Sunday.

  • Bengals' Jessie Bates: In great shape

Bates is in great game shape despite missing all of training camp, Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com reports.

It appears that Bates will be ready for full-time snaps right away in Week 1. "I forget that he missed time to be honest with you," coach Zac Taylor said of Bates. "I think he did a really good job taking care of himself. We wanted to be cautious as we integrated him back into what we were doing. He's a got a great understanding of what we're doing and he's up to speed on any tweaks that we made and we expect him to be out there every down."

  • Bengals' Jessie Bates: Reports to team

Bates has reported to the Bengals, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.

Absent from camp after receiving the franchise tag this offseason, Bates is ready to sign the tag and play out 2022 on a $12.9 million salary. He'd get a deal for more than that per season on the open market, but the Bengals can tag him again next spring at a salary of around $15.5 million. Bates had his worst statistical season last year, but he bounced back and then some in the playoffs, recording more pass defenses (six) and interceptions (two) than he'd had during the entire regular season. He started his career with three straight years of 100-plus tackles and exactly three interceptions, dropping to 88 tackles and one pick in 15 regular-season appearances last year.

  • Bengals' Jessie Bates: Signs franchise tag

Bates signed his franchise tag with the Bengals on Tuesday, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.

Bates reported to training camp Tuesday for the first time this season and signed his $12.9 million franchise tag for 2022. The 2018 second-round pick had his worst statistical season last year, but he bounced back in the playoffs, recording more pass defenses (six) and interceptions (two) than he'd had during the regular season. He's played a prominent role in Cincinnati's secondary since he was drafted and should once again be on fantasy radars in IDP leagues.
