College football scores, rankings, highlights in Week 3: Miami throttles South Florida, Ohio State survives

Elsewhere, Vanderbilt shocked No. 11 South Carolina for a big SEC victory

Week 3 of the 2025 college football season brings a loaded Saturday slate featuring three ranked matchups that could shape the College Football Playoff race, along with key showdowns in the ACC and SEC.

After falling at Florida State in Week 1, No. 19 Alabama rebounded with a rout of ULM and now faces another test at home against Wisconsin in one of the marquee noon ET games. No. 12 Clemson is also in action early, traveling to Georgia Tech.

The afternoon window is highlighted by USC's trip to Purdue on CBS and a top-15 SEC clash as No. 6 Georgia visits No. 15 Tennessee in Knoxville.

In the evening, No. 18 South Florida takes on No. 5 Miami in a battle of unbeatens. The nightcap features No. 8 Notre Dame hosting No. 16 Texas A&M, while Florida looks to recover from its first loss when it meets No. 3 LSU.

Vanderbilt crushes No. 11 South Carolina

FINAL: Vanderbilt 31, South Carolina 7

Clark Lea and the Commodores should make their debut in Sunday's updated AP Poll following Saturday night's convincing win over the Gamecocks. Vanderbilt snapped a 16-game losing streak in the series with a dominant showing behind a couple touchdown passes from Diego Pavia and an opportunistic defense that forced the Gamecocks' first three turnovers of the season.

Vanderbilt has three consecutive 20-point wins to open a season for the first time since 1930. South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers left the game in the second quarter and did not return after taking a shot to the chin, resulting in a targeting penalty. His backup, Luke Doty, was inefficient after intermission with the Gamecocks' lone touchdown coming on the first possession of the contest on a run from Rahsul Faison. 

Star defensive end Dylan Stewart was whistled twice for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, the second resulting in an ejection in the second half after he slapped Pavia's helmet after a play.

FINAL: No. 17 Ole Miss 41, Arkansas 35

The Rebels picked up their second SEC win of the season, but it wasn't easy. Razorbacks quarterback Taylen Green did everything he could to bring home a win, but the only player better than Green was Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss.

Chambliss, who started in place of the injured Austin Simmons, threw for 353 yards and a touchdown on 21-of-29 passing. He also led the team with 62 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Chambliss now joins Jordan Ta'amu and Chad Kelly as the only Ole Miss quarterbacks in the last 30 years to notch 350+ passing yards and 2+ rushing touchdowns in the same game.

When Simmons is healthy, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin may have a decision to make -- or perhaps Chambliss made the decision very easy tonight. Before getting hurt against Kentucky last week, Simmons was completing just 60% of his throws and had thrown four interceptions in two games.

For Arkansas, Green deserves a tip of the cap because he nearly pulled off a one-man upset of Ole Miss. Green finished the night with 420 total yards and two touchdowns. He did everything on offense and even had Arkansas in position to win the game with under two minutes left, but a fumble by Jalen Brown killed the Razorbacks' comeback hopes.

Vanderbilt leads South Carolina at halftime

HALF: Vanderbilt 14, South Carolina 7

On the strength of Diego Pavia's 5-yard touchdown pass to Junior Sherrill with 1:56 to play in the second quarter, the Commodores have the edge over the 11th-ranked Gamecocks at intermission on the road. Pavia's toss capped a 12-play, 76-yard drive that took nearly six minutes off the clock. Gamecocks quarterback and Heisman candidate LaNorris Sellers threw his first interception of the season near the end of the first quarter after Vanderbilt defensive tackle Zaylin Wood dropped into coverage and swiped the football. 

Sellers fell awkwardly on the Gamecocks' final possession of the half after getting hit in the helmet under the chin by Vanderbilt's Langston Patterson, who was ejected for targeting on the play after review. South Carolina has won 16 straight in the SEC series, including a 21-point victory over Pavia's team last season.

EARLY 3Q: No. 1 Ohio State 13, Ohio 9

Here comes Ohio. On one of the first plays from scrimmage in the second half, Ohio quarterback Parker Navarro connected with Chase Hendricks for a 67-yard touchdown. Navarro missed most of the first half because of injury, and it appears he is going to stay in the game. The Buckeyes were coming off a blowout win over Grambling, but the Bobcats are testing them early in the third quarter.

Ohio State's defense held Ohio to 28 yards of offense in the first half.

Halftime: No. 17 Ole Miss 31, Arkansas 28

If you like offense, this is the game for you. Defense was optional throughout the first half in Oxford, and three different quarterbacks have found the end zone. This is the first FBS game of the season where both teams have at least 28 points at the half.

Trinidad Chambliss got the start at QB for Ole Miss in place of the injured Austin Simmons, and he has been carving up the Arkansas secondary to the tune of 231 yards. He also added 26 yards and a pair of scores on the ground, but Chambliss hasn't done all the heavy lifting for the Rebels. At one point, Chambliss suffered a hand injury and had to exit the game because he was bleeding. The injured Simmons came into the game and finished off a touchdown drive with a four-yard pass before limping back to the sideline.

On the other side, the Razorbacks' offense has consisted of all Taylen Green, all the time. His 258 yards of total offense (166 passing and 92 rushing) have his team in this game at the break. The question is whether Green can keep this Superman act up for another 30 minutes.

Many expected the Monarchs to be live 6.5-point underdogs at Lane Stadium on Saturday night, but few expected them to lead by four touchdowns at the half. After playing South Carolina fairly tough in the opener, things have gotten progressively worse for Virginia Tech ever since. 

The Hokies have now given up 62 unanswered points at home over their last four quarters of football, getting outscored 34-0 in the second half by Vanderbilt a week ago and now going down 28-0 to Old Dominion on Saturday. Brent Pry's days in Blacksburg seem numbered, as the Hokies aren't just bad, they look like a team that's disinterested, which is a really bad combination. 

There are just far too many non-competitive reps by the defense against an ODU team that's a good Sun Belt team but should not be manhandling them the way they are. Old Dominion has 334 yards of offense in the first half and are getting anything they want, with Virginia Tech helping whenever possible with some brutal penalties as well. 

On offense, Kyren Drones is constantly under siege behind a banged up offensive line, and the Hokies have a grand total of 25 passing yards at the half against the Monarchs. It's always tempting to say it can't get worse for Virginia Tech, but we probably would've said that after last week and this feels considerably worse than the loss to Vanderbilt.

The Irish went up 7-0 early on the Aggies in the top-25 showdown thanks to a big special teams play, as Texas A&M's punt unit did a terrible job with their blocking assignments and let a free runner come straight up the middle to block the punt and return it for a touchdown. 

Blocking 101 is to work inside-out, but the Aggies botched their assignments and abandoned a guy who came through the A-gap untouched straight to the punter. From there, the Irish did a nice job staying composed with a bouncing ball and finishing the play with a scoop-and-score. 

Texas A&M answered quickly with an 86-yard touchdown from Marcel Reed to Mario Craver, who used a Notre Dame tackle attempt like a slingshot to propel himself further downfield for the TD. 

That evened things up at 7-7 in what looks like it might be a high-scoring affair in South Bend.

A week after losing to Ohio on the road, West Virginia bounced back with a 31-24 comeback win over Pitt in overtime in the Backyard Brawl in Rich Rodriguez's return to the rivalry. West Virginia led 14-3 in the early second quarter, but Pitt scored 21 unanswered to go up 24-14 in the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers had to battle back with 10 points in the final six minutes of the ball game -- including the game-tying TD with 11 seconds to play -- to force overtime in Morgantown. 

In OT, West Virginia rolled the dice and went for a fourth and 1 inside the 5 rather than kicking a FG, and that aggressiveness paid off as they picked up the first down and punched it in for a go-ahead touchdown two plays later. Pitt's offense went backwards on their overtime possession, ultimately throwing an incompletion on 4th and 24 to give the Mountaineers a huge win in RichRod's first year back at the helm. 

It's the first loss of the season for Pitt and one they'll be kicking themselves over as they weathered the early onslaught from WVU and seemed in full control midway through the fourth quarter. However, they got a bit too conservative on offense trying to preserve the lead and work clock and couldn't get it revved back up in overtime. West Virginia, meanwhile, shakes off a dreadful performance on the road at Ohio and heads into Big 12 play with some confidence coming out of pulling the upset at home over their rivals.

HALF: Miami 28, USF 6

In a battle of Sunshine State unbeatens, Miami quarterback Carson Beck has accounted for three first-half touchdowns as the Hurricanes lead USF at intermission behind nearly 300 yards of total offense. Despite the game being delayed more than 100 minutes in the first quarter, Beck punctuated Miami's first two possessions of the contest with scoring tosses to Joshua Moore. Byrum Brown's nation-leading streak of passes without an interception ended at 253 in the second quarter and the Hurricanes cashed in a few plays later on a 2-yard touchdown run from Beck. Coming off nationally-ranked wins over Boise State and Florida to open the campaign, USF is trying to crack the top 15 with another victory.

No one likes to slap the "must-win" label on a Week 3 game, but for Notre Dame, opportunities to impress the College Football Playoff selection committee are slim outside of Saturday's matchup with Texas A&M.

Slotted No. 16 in this week's AP poll, the Aggies (2-0) are the only remaining opponent on Notre Dame's schedule currently ranked in the top 25. USC (2-0) is on the fringe, pulling the fifth-most points in the "receiving votes" category, and Navy(2-0) could climb, but the rest of the slate looks barren.

Playoff expansion has created room for multi-loss teams, but a defeat for Notre Dame (0-1) leaves no margin for error -- and no guarantee a 10-2 finish would be enough to land one of the seven at-large bids. Of the eight teams with two or more losses that reached last season's playoff, two earned automatic spots as conference champions while the other six owned at least one win over a ranked opponent.

If Notre Dame doesn't run the table, it would be battling at-large candidates from the SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Big 12, along with the possibility of a second Group of Five bid given South Florida's rise. Most top-tier programs in those leagues have multiple chances at ranked wins this fall.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Sitting in Texas A&M's sprawling athletics cafeteria, which serves everything from fresh-baked pizza to hibachi, Aggies starting quarterback Marcel Reed is sneaking in bites of fried shrimp during a mid-August interview. 

The through line of the conversation keeps coming back to goals. 

Reed wants Texas A&M to finish better in 2025 after the program squandered a SEC championship opportunity with a 1-3 record to end the regular season. He often thinks of his dropped snap in the fourth quarter against Auburn last year. He needs to finish his plate (and maybe a to-go pizza). A big goal of his is to pack on muscle. 

The son of Tennessee State's all-time leading tackler -- former Tigers coach Rod Reed -- and the grandson of a former NFL offensive lineman, Reed's build belies that generational bulk. He's a slender 6-foot-2, 182 pounds. "I got my mom's genes," Reed said.

This may be tough to believe, but the Tigers and Gators don't really like each other. Over an hour before kickoff, with players just getting loose on the field, Florida and LSU exchanged pleasantries on the field. As a result, flags were thrown before the opening kickoff.

Those flags could prove to be pivotal because every player on both sides has been assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. That means anyone else who takes an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty will be ejected from the game.

This rivalry matchup already has the makings of a heated affair. That's especially true for Florida, which has to be frustrated coming off a loss to USF at home. The good news for Billy Napier and the Gators is that they can atone for that with a win over the Tigers in Death Valley. The last time Florida beat LSU in Baton Rouge was 2016, and it needs another win like that to regain some positive momentum.

Delaware improved to 2-1 on the season and picked up their first win against an FBS opponent since moving up to the FBS level this year by beating UConn as a 10.5-point underdog at home on Saturday in a wild 44-41 overtime thriller. 

Delaware trailed 38-35 late in the fourth quarter, but drove down the field (with the help of pass interference on a 4th down) for a game-tying 43-yard field goal. In overtime, they stopped UConn's offense on the goal line and forced a field goal after a 3rd down sack. On their first OT possession, the Blue Hens punched it in for the game-winning touchdown on a read option pull by QB Nick Minicucci to make a bit of program history. 

While it's a big win for Delaware in their first season moving up to FBS, it is the second straight brutal overtime loss for the Huskies. After blowing a late lead against Syracuse and falling short of pulling off the upset last week, they lose in similarly gutting fashion as a double-digit favorite at Delaware and find themselves 1-2 on the young season.

HALF: Texas 14, UTEP 3

Arch Manning's first half vs. UTEP ended with a 5-yard touchdown run to put the Longhorns up 14-3 with one second left in the second quarter. But it was a fairly disastrous half for the redshirt sophomore quarterback. He completed just 5 of 16 passes for 69 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. The Miners consistently pressured him, and Texas' running game struggled to consistently keep the Longhorns ahead of the sticks. This offense — hyped as any in college football entering the season — remains a significant work in progress.

It's been a stormy Saturday across college football with lightning forcing a weather delay at Hard Rock Stadium. Officials have detected lightning in the vicinity of Hard Rock Stadium, forcing the game between No. 18 South Florida and No. 5 Miami into a delay with 13:45 remaining in the second quarter. The Hurricanes lead 14-3.

Play was initially scheduled to resume at 6:05 p.m. ET, but that got extended to 6:33 p.m. as the soonest the game could resume due to lightning in the area.

Texas running back CJ Baxter will miss the remainder of his team's game against UTEP after suffering an injury on his first carry of the day, per the broadcast. Baxter came up limping after gaining 6 yards and will not return. This is a major blow to the Longhorns' overall depth at the position. Texas is already without  Quintrevion Wisner today, who is out due to injury.

Baxter missed the entire 2024 season after suffering a torn LCL and PCL in his right leg during fall camp.

Folks around the Tennessee football program would deny it publicly, but several are closely tracking Nico Iamaleava's weekly slide from grace at UCLA. "There are some who pay attention for sure," a Tennessee source said. 

Even those who don't are kept abreast because, as another program source put it, "You don't have to watch, because Tennessee Twitter is all over it." 

Who among us hasn't kept up with an ex? 

Right now, it's Tennessee that's thriving -- with a revenge body. The No. 15 Vols are 2-0 ahead of a home showdown with No. 6 Georgia. Arguably the biggest catalyst for that hot start is the player to be named later from Tennessee's wonky quarterback "trade" this spring with UCLA.

Final: Georgia Tech 24, No. 12 Clemson 21

The upset is complete. The Yellow Jackets had Dabo Swinney's Tigers on notice from the early going after they jumped out to a 13-0 lead. While Clemson rallied back to tie the game with 3:26 left to play, the home side got the last laugh. Aidan Birr drilled a 55-yard field goal attempt on a fire drill as time expired to send the Bobby Dodd Stadium crowd into a state of pure jubilation.

It is another monumental victory for Brent Key as he continues to build his program into an ACC contender; the Yellow Jackets are 7-1 vs. AP-ranked ACC opponents under his guidance. Last season came with multiple top-25 wins and a couple of close calls, and the victory over No. 4 Miami last November highlighted the Yellow Jackets' season. They nearly pulled off another stunner in the regular-season finale when they took No. 6 Georgia to a whopping eight overtimes.

Clemson, meanwhile, suddenly has two losses in three games to open the year and is already on the ropes in its pursuit of a return trip to the College Football Playoff. The upset in Atlanta snaps a nine-game winning streak for the Tigers against their ACC rival.

In the transfer portal era, roster overhauls have become commonplace. But the sheer volume of Purdue's transformation is staggering.

Mostly out of necessity, the Boilermakers executed one of the most ambitious roster rebuilds in college football history ahead of the 2025 season, bringing in 82 new players. Fifty-two of them arrived via transfer -- the most of any Power Four program this year.

From the moment first-year coach Barry Odom and first-time general manager Brandon Lee arrived in West Lafayette, they faced the logistical challenge of managing an endless cycle of visits and recruiting pitches. Travel schedules had to be balanced against competing offers in a chaotic portal market, all while trying to restock an entire roster.

Oklahoma defensive lineman R Mason Thomas was ejected from Saturday's Week 3 game at Temple for a targeting penalty and will be suspended for the first half of the key Week 4 showdown with Auburn as a result of the foul. His absence for the remainder of this week's contest is likely not a setback -- the Sooners held a 28-3 lead when he exited -- but Oklahoma will be without an All-SEC standout when it opens conference play in what should be a top 25 clash with Tigers QB (and former OU signal-caller) Jackson Arnold returning to Norman.

Officials determined upon review that Thomas' hit on Temple quarterback Evan Simon in the third quarter rose to the level of targeting after initially throwing the flag for roughing the passer.

Florida coach Billy Napier confirmed Saturday that redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Brendan Bett will miss "a little bit of time" as the Gators prepare to face No. 3 LSU at Tiger Stadium. Bett's status had been uncertain following his late-game ejection in Florida's 18-16 loss to South Florida in Week 2, when he was flagged and ejected for spitting on Bulls offensive lineman Cole Skinner.

Napier stressed earlier this week that the incident was out of character for Bett. 

"Look, I think that the kid is remorseful," Napier said. "I think he feels as if he let the team down. In general, it was out of character for him and he made a mistake and he compromised the team. He made a selfish decision. He misrepresented our fans and our alumni, the university."

Bett had been a contributor in Florida's first two games, playing 15 snaps against LIU with three tackles, and 29 snaps against USF with five tackles before his ejection. It is unclear just how long Bett will be held out against LSU.

Alabama handles Wisconsin

FINAL: No. 19 Alabama 38, Wisconsin 14

Behind five touchdown passes from Ty Simpson, two interceptions from safety Bray Hubbard and a breakout performance from wideout Ryan Williams, the Crimson Tide cruised past the Badgers in dominant fashion. Simpson's sparking 24-of-29 performance for 389 yards included 12 consecutive completions at one point, highlighted by a pair of bows to Germie Bernard and Williams. Williams finished with five catches for 165, his first 100-yard outing since last season's win over Georgia.

Alabama's defensive staff challenged its player to force the issue at the line of scrimmage against the Badgers and the Crimson Tide delivered with their first three sacks of the season. Alabama has outscored the opposition, 111-14, since the season-opening loss at Florida State. DeBoer was appreciative of his team's response in last week's 73-0 win over ULM and an early three-touchdown lead against Wisconsin showed the Crimson Tide were once again ready from the start.

No. 12 Clemson takes lead on Wesco's explosive

3Q: Clemson 14, Georgia Tech 13

12th-ranked Clemson leads Georgia Tech in the third quarter following Cade Klubnik's 73-yard touchdown strike to Bryant Wesco. Wesco took a slot cross over the middle from Klubnik and did the rest himself, racing past several Yellow Jackets down the sideline for the score and the Tigers' first lead of the contest. After Georgia Tech pushed its lead to 13-0 in the second quarter, Clemson scored with a minute to play in the first half on Klubnik's sneak from inside the 1. Dabo Sweeney is just 19-31 overall at Clemson when trailing at halftime, but his team has an opportunity to improve that mark in their ACC opener.

Early 3Q: No. 19 Alabama 35, Wisconsin 7 

Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams is back. The Crimson Tide star is having a signature performance in Alabama's Week 3 showdown against Wisconsin -- his first action on the field since he suffered a concussion in Alabama's season-opening loss to Florida State. After he scored a 75-yard touchdown to open the second half, he just had a phenomenal catch-and-run reminiscent of his highlight catch in Alabama's win against Georgia last season. 

Williams caught a ball from quarterback Ty Simpson near the sideline and immediately cut back, making two Wisconsin defenders hit the turf in the process. From there, he sprinted into the end zone for his second touchdown of the afternoon. Today marks the first time since Nov. 16 that Williams has scored a touchdown.

Georgia Tech leads No. 12 Clemson at halftime

The Tigers are on the scoreboard following Cade Klubnik's sneak from inside the 1-yard line with 49 seconds left in the second quarter. On the previous snap, the Yellow Jackets stuff Clemson's quarterback at the goal line and the ruling was upheld upon video review. In the ACC opener for both teams, Georgia Tech led 13-0 and largely dominated the opening half before Klubnik hit Bryant Wesco on third down inside the red zone over the middle on a slant to set up a goal-to-go situation for the Tigers. 

Aidan Birr connected on both field goal attempts (40, 42) for the Yellow Jackets, while a 5-yard plunge from Jamal Haynes on the first play of the second quarter capped a five-play, 65-yard scoring drive for his team. Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King, who was a game-time decision, is 12 of 16 passing for 129 yards and has 28 yards on the ground. Georgia Tech has won six of its last seven games against ranked teams under Brent Key. However, the Yellow Jackets have not beaten Clemson since 2014, a span of nine games.

Memphis wide receiver Brady Kluse made his early case for catch of the year with a ridiculous touchdown nab against Troy. Tigers quarterback Brendon Lewis launched a wild ball off his back foot while getting tackled, and Kluse managed to hold off a defensive back and reel in a one-handed touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone. Amazingly, the catch was Kluse's first career touchdown. 

The 18-yard touchdown catch gave undefeated Memphis a 14-7 lead over Troy in the second quarter of a key nonconference game. Lewis already has 170 yards passing in the second quarter.

The No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class showed off his dual-threat ability in a hot start to Michigan's in-state clash with the Chippewas. Underwood delivered his first highlight of the afternoon on a perfectly thrown ball to Semaj Morgan for a 32-yard touchdown, giving the Wolverines a 14-0 lead just past the halfway mark of the first quarter.

Much of Underwood's appeal stems from his rushing prowess. Albeit more of a pocket passer by nature, the athletic quarterback is a terrific runner for his size and displayed that part of his skill set on a 20-yard scamper for Michigan's third touchdown of the half. He took a designed keeper to the house to make it 21-0 Wolverines early in the second frame.

Alabama strikes first vs. Wisconsin

After failing on fourth down near midfield on its first possession, Alabama got the scoring started against Wisconsin thanks to Germie Bernard's 2-yard touchdown run on another fourth down opportunity near the end of the first quarter. Bernard is a wide receiver at Alabama but was lined up in the backfield, an expert play call from OC Ryan Grubb. Crimson Tide safety Bray Hubbard intercepted Wisconsin quarterback Danny O'Neil and Alabama cashed in with an 11-play, 61-yard scoring drive. This comes after Hubbard said this week he took it personal after being called out for lazy play during Alabama's season-opening loss at Florida State.

In last week's Six Pack, I told you how sloppy early season play had led to unders cashing at a ridiculous rate (57.6%) through the first week of the season, finishing an average of 5.07 points below the closing total. I also told you not to count on that being the case in Week 2.

Well, if we counted that prediction with my picks, I'd have gone 5-2 last week instead of 4-2, because the over bounced back in a big way. The over went 76-57 last week, cashing at a nearly identical rate (57.1%) as the unders had prior. However, the average game finished only 1.88 points above the listed total. Why? Because the books adjusted.

The average total for games in Week 0 and Week 1 was 53.43. In Week 2, it dropped to 52.45. Not enough to make up the entire gap, but enough to serve as another reminder that just because something worked one week doesn't mean it'll work the next. The books are always adjusting based on what happened, and we can't approach things any differently.

Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams is expected to play against Wisconsin for Week 3 after missing his team's last game against ULM while in concussion protocol, Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer said on Wednesday. Williams exited in the fourth quarter of Alabama's 31-17 season opening loss to Florida State and did not return. 

"Ryan Williams, we expect him to play," DeBoer said.

The injury occurred when Williams was met by FSU defenders after dropping a pass from quarterback Ty Simpson. As he lost his balance, Williams' head hit the turf, but he was able to leave under his own power. Williams finished the game with five catches for 30 yards.
