  • Jets' Mekhi Becton: Will have to compete for job

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Becton (knee) will have to compete with George Fant for the left tackle job during training camp next season, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Becton was the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and started 13 games at left tackle during his rookie season. However, he suffered an MCL injury during Week 1 of the 2021 campaign and was ultimately sidelined for the entire season. Fant took over and apparently played well enough to compete with Becton for the starting left tackle gig when both are healthy. Becton should be fully recovered by the time training camp rolls around, but he'll have to do more than just go through the motions if he wants to be the Jets' starting left tackle Week 1.

  • Jets' Mekhi Becton: Likely out for season

Coach Robert Saleh said Monday that he expects Becton (knee) to be sidelined for the final two games of the regular season, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.

Becton has been sidelined since mid-September after he underwent knee surgery, but the Jets were hopeful that he'd be able to return late in the season. Although the 22-year-old didn't suffer a setback in his recovery, he's unlikely to be cleared in time for the final two games of the year. George Fant should continue to serve as the Jets' starting left tackle.

Becton (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Jacksonville and has been unable to return to practice, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York reports.

The Jets have been optimistic over the last few weeks that Becton would be able to return before the end of the season, but based on the fact that he's still yet to resume practicing, it's looking more likely that his 2021 is over. Still, the team has yet to officially rule him out for the last two weeks against two tough opponents in Tampa Bay and Buffalo.
