College football scores, rankings, highlights in Week 13: Oklahoma among contenders to make CFP case with win

Several teams strengthened their cases to the College Football Playoff committee in the season's penultimate weekend. No. 8 Oklahoma sent a message with a 17-6 win over Missouri. It wasn't always pretty, but it marked the Sooners' third straight win over a ranked opponent -- and their fifth overall -- as they head into next week's matchup with LSU needing a win to secure a CFP spot.

No. 14 Vanderbilt and No. 13 Miami remain outside the CFP bubble, but both are clinging to hope that a late-season surge can push them into the field. They did their part Saturday: Vanderbilt rolled Kentucky 45-17, and Miami handled Virginia Tech 34-17.

No. 17 Texas kept its faint CFP hopes alive with a 52-37 win over Arkansas, while Ohio State torched Rutgers 42-9 to set up a monumental showdown with rival Michigan in the final week of the season.

Notre Dame went scorched earth on Syracuse, pounding the Orange 70-7 in an effort to further impress the College Football Playoff committee.

Pitt knocks off Georgia Tech to create ACC title game chaos

All Georgia Tech needed to do on Saturday was beat Pitt to punch their ticket to Charlotte for the ACC Championship game, but the Yellow Jackets no-showed the first quarter and dug themselves a 28-0 hole after 20 minutes of play they were never able to fully dig their way out of in a 42-28 loss that creates some real Week 14 chaos in the conference title race.

Pitt jumped all over the Jackets early, with Mason Heintschel slinging it and Pitt's defense creating problems for Haynes King and the GT offense. Georgia Tech would rally to cut the deficit to 14 at the half and they had momentum on their side until the backbreaker -- a 100-yard pick six as they were set to trim the lead to just seven in the third quarter.

They would eventually get it back down to a 7-point deficit after a bizarre Pitt decision to go for a fake punt backfired in the fourth quarter, but Jakyrian Turner bailed out his coach on the ensuing drive with a 56-yard touchdown run that put the game on ice for the Panthers.

With the win, Pitt improves to 8-3 and has just the one loss in conference, meaning a win next week over Miami gives them a chance at reaching Charlotte if SMU or Virginia lose their final game. The Mustangs and Cavaliers are now in the drivers seat for a spot in the title game, but as Georgia Tech learned the hard way, getting that last win to punch your ticket is often the hardest one.

Utah escapes a wild 51-47 shootout with Kansas State to keep Playoff hopes alive

The No. 12 team in the country found itself on the ropes at home deep into the fourth quarter, but the Utes found a way to beat Kansas State in a classic Big 12 shootout in Salt Lake City.

The play of the game was Devon Dampier ripping off a 59-yard run on 4th-and-1 with just over a minute to go to set up the go-ahead touchdown (fittingly on a Dampier run), as the Utes scored 14 points in the final three minutes to erase a 10-point deficit and rip the hearts out of the Wildcats.

Kansas State was not built for a one-minute drill, as they'd done all their damage on the ground on Saturday, rushing for an incredible 472 yards on the Utah defense. Joe Jackson set a new K-State record for single-game yardage with 293 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries, breaking Darren Sproles' school record, as he torched the Utah defense almost all night.

Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they were forced to throw the ball on the final possession trailing by four with under a minute to go and no timeouts. That resulted in a quick interception thrown by Avery Johnson to seal Utah's win in one of the craziest games of the season.

With the win, the Utes can keep their hopes of an at-large Playoff berth alive, although they'll need a lot of help from teams in front of them losing to get there. Sitting 12th won't be enough and they likely won't move up on this win, but the path with a win next week is still possible if a lot of things break right for the Utes.

Pitt storms out to a 21-0 first quarter lead on Georgia Tech

The ACC title game picture looks like it's going to get a whole lot murkier after tonight's game in Atlanta. Pitt has jumped all over Georgia Tech in Atlanta, taking a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter as they've dominated the first 15 minutes of action on both sides of the ball.

Mason Heintschel is balling after a rough game against Notre Dame, as the freshman has settled in quickly on the road and is picking apart a Georgia Tech defense that has struggled in recent weeks.

Adding to the Yellow Jackets woes are offensive struggles, with Haynes King throwing for just 23 yards and an interception (which setup Pitt's third TD of the quarter) in the first 15 minutes of action.

Pitt will start the second quarter with the football after forcing another 3-and-out from the Yellow Jackets, and it's getting late early for Georgia Tech's hopes of wrapping up an ACC title game bid tonight. All they needed to do was win to be in, but a Pitt win opens the door for a number of teams, including the Panthers, to make it to Charlotte.

Duke's fake FG key in comeback win to end UNC's bowl hopes in Bill Belichick's first season

FINAL: Duke 32, North Carolina 25

UNC's hope of a late season surge to a bowl game in Bill Belichick's first season came to an end on Saturday in Chapel Hill when rival Duke strolled into town and beat the Tar Heels 32-25.

It was a wild game where Duke was in control early, but UNC fought back in the second half to take a 25-24 lead in the fourth quarter. On Duke's final drive, the Blue Devils lined up for a go-ahead field goal, but sprung a fake field goal run with their kicker, who nearly took it to the house, setting up a goal-to-go situation.

It was a gorgeous fake that caught UNC in an all-out block situation and the Blue Devils punched it in for the go-ahead touchdown and converted the two-point conversion to push their lead to seven. The Tar Heels went backwards on their final possession and failed to convert a 4th and 13 to lose the Victory Bell.

With the loss, UNC falls to 4-7 on the season and will not go bowling in Bill Belichick's first season. The big frustration for Belichick in this one will have to be the lack of discipline late from his team, as they had three unsportsmanlike penalties in the closing minutes after plays as frustration started to boil over.

For the Blue Devils, the win pushes them to 6-5 and gets them bowl eligible under Manny Diaz for a second consecutive season. Duke has had its ups and downs this season, but a win over Wake Forest at home next week would get them to another respectable seven-win season.

No. 9 Notre Dame sets scoring record against Syracuse

FINAL: No. 9 Notre Dame 70, Syracuse 7

The Fighting Irish scored 21 points before taking an offensive snap and poured it on from there during a record-setting destruction of the Orange. Notre Dame's 70 points is the program's modern record, breaking the 69-point previous mark against Georgia Tech in 1977. Notre Dame also notched 16 tackles for losses in the contest, also a single-game program record.

Two interception returns for touchdowns and a blocked punt for a score in the first five minutes of the game led the rout, along with three touchdowns from budding Heisman candidate Jeremiyah Love. Notre Dame will be in the College Football Playoff with a win next win over Stanford with its seeding yet-to-be-determined. The Fighting Irish have now won nine straight this fall since an 0-2 start and 19 overall during the regular season when facing playoff elimination.

Arch Manning doing it all for Texas

Mid 3Q: No. 17 Texas 38, Arkansas 20

Texas quarterback Arch Manning is having a day against Arkansas, one of the Longhorns' oldest rivals. He's getting anything he wants against a porous Arkansas defense and he's scoring in just about every way possible. In fact, Manning is the first SEC quarterback since Dak Prescott in 2014 to have a passing touchdown, receiving touchdown and rushing touchdown in the same game. Only five different quarterbacks have accomplished that feat since 2000, though Prescott did it twice during his time at Mississippi State.

Manning is also up to 304 yards passing and three touchdowns after his latest eight-yard scoring strike to wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. The young quarterback is putting together one of the best games of his career when Texas needs it most as, in spite of a 7-3 record, the Longhorns still have an outside shot at an at-large bid in the College Football Playoff.

Kansas State runs all over Utah to take a 31-21 lead at the half

Utah came into Saturday ranked 12th in the country with an outside shot at the College Football Playoff, but those hopes are fading quickly as they are getting carved up by the Kansas State rushing attack.

The Wildcats have a 31-21 lead in Salt Lake City thanks to 349 first half rushing yards, as they are getting whatever they want on the ground against the usually stout Utah defense. Joe Jackson has accounted for 236 of those yards on just 10 carries, finding the end zone twice to help K-State jump out to a 10-point lead. Jackson's 236 yards in the first half are the most by any player in a half in FBS football this season.

Utah's defensive front cannot get much of any penetration and as they bring more men into the box, all that seems to be accomplishing is creating opportunities for K-State to break huge runs because once they get through the first line of defense, there's no one home in the back end.

Avery Johnson has only needed to throw for 35 yards on 5-of-10 passing, because the Wildcats don't even need the threat of the downfield pass to move it on the Utes. Utah's offense has done fine itself with 266 total yards, including 144 on the ground themselves, but this game will come down to the Utes defense figuring out a way to stop the Wildcats from gashing them over and over in the running game.

Bryce Underwood balling against Maryland

Halftime: No. 18 Michigan 21, Maryland 10

It's been all Bryce Underwood in College Park so far. He's completed 14 of his 19 passing attempts for 183 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and the true freshman is getting just about whatever he wants against the Terrapins.

One of Underwood's best throws of the half came on his 12-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Marsh in the first quarter. Underwood lofted the ball into the corner of the end zone and dropped it in the bucket. Marsh was able to haul it in despite having a Maryland defender on his back the whole way.

The Michigan defense has done a nice job containing the Terrapins, holding them to 3.2 yards per rush and forcing a Malik Washington interception. This should be a nice tune-up for that unit before facing the Ohio State offense next week.

No. 17 Texas holds slim lead over Arkansas

Halftime: No. 17 Texas 24, Arkansas 20

Arkansas has been a tough out in SEC play all season, and today has been no different. The Razorbacks are hanging around with Texas, even though Arch Manning has already put up some big numbers.

Manning is already at 213 yards and three total touchdowns on the afternoon. He and wide receiver Parker Livingstone have thrown touchdown passes to each other (you read that correctly). In the first quarter, Steve Sarkisian pulled out some trickery on a wide receiver pass for a score.

On the other side, Arkansas has found some big plays of its own, especially in the running game. Mike Washington Jr. and Taylern Green have combined for 157 rushing yards with an average of 9.2 yards per attempt. If the Longhorns are going to put the Razorbacks away in the second half, they have to slow this Arkansas ground game.

No. 14 Vanderbilt cruising against Kentucky

Half: No. 14 Vanderbilt 24, Kentucky 3

Vanderbilt is taking care of business and, more importantly, keeping its College Football Playoff hopes alive against Kentucky thus far. The Commodores have dominated in every aspect of the game to open up a three-possession lead at halftime. Quarterback Diego Pavia is turning in another memorable performance against the Wildcats.

He finished the first half with 18 completions on 22 attempts for 279 yards and two touchdowns, including a 56-yard connection with wide receiver Tre Richardson near the end of the second quarter. Richardson was Pavia's favorite target, as the two connected for 144 yards and both of those touchdowns through the air.

By comparison, Kentucky had 81 yards as a team. The Wildcats rushed for just three yards on 11 carries, as Vanderbilt dominated the line of scrimmage defensively. It's worth monitoring the status of Kentucky quarterback Cutter Boley in the second half. He briefly exited the game with an apparent injury in the second quarter before returning after missing a handful of plays. If he's limited at all, the Wildcats will turn to former Incarnate Word transfer Zach Calzada.

Bill Belichick's bowl dreams are fading as UNC trails Duke at halftime

North Carolina was able to orchestrate a field goal drive on its final possession of the half to cut the deficit to 17-10, but the 4-6 Tar Heels' bowl dreams are fading as they trail their cross-triangle rivals at halftime.

Carolina took the early lead on a long opening drive, culminating in a Gio Lopez rushing touchdown, but the offense stalled out after the scripted drive as has been the case often this season. On the other side, Duke's offense has put up points on all three of its possessions (aside from kneeling out the final few seconds before halftime), as Darian Mensah and the Blue Devils have not had any problems moving it on Bill Belichick's defense.

The defense has been UNC's calling card in their midseason upswing, but Duke has avoided the mistakes that have plagued them all season and marched up and down the field methodically in the first half. Mensah is 13-of-17 for 103 yards and a touchdown and they've added 80 yards rushing as a team.

The Heels have 131 yards of offense, almost entirely on the first and last drives of the half, and will need to find some more consistency if they're going to keep up with Duke and keep their hopes of back-to-back wins late in the year to make a bowl visit in Belichick's first season at the helm.

Arch Manning gets his first career receiving TD against Arkansas

The Texas offense is humming early against Arkansas. After Arch Manning delivered a beautiful deep ball for the Longhorns' first touchdown of the game, he added the first receiving touchdown of his career on their first red zone trip, as Steve Sarkisian dialed up the Philly Special to get Manning wide open in the corner of the end zone.

It was a better catch by Manning than it needed to be, as he put his athleticism on display to go up and get what was a near over-throw from Parker Livingstone. It's not a surprise that the Texas offense has it rolling early against an Arkansas defense that is among the worst in the SEC, but for Longhorns fans that have been frustrated with the offensive performance at times this season, seeing Manning 6-for-6 for 125 yards, one passing touchdown and one receiving touchdown in the first quarter is a welcome sight.

Notre Dame goes up 21-0 on Syracuse before taking an offensive snap

Things escalated quickly in South Bend, as Notre Dame put 21 points on the board before CJ Carr even took a snap. The Irish got two pick-6's and a partially blocked punt return touchdown in the first five minutes of play as they look to put more style points on the board to keep the College Football Playoff committee impressed and hold on to an at-large position in the playoff field.

Poor Orange quarterback Joseph Filardi has completed two passes to Syracuse receivers and two passes to Notre Dame defensive backs, with both of those going all the way back for touchdowns.

The Irish finally got to send the offense out after the Orange successfully got off a punt on their fourth drive of the game, but Notre Dame wasn't on the field for long as Jeremiyah Love took it 45 yards to the house a few plays into the drive to put the Irish up 28-0 and put a wrap on this one midway through the first quarter.

No. 13 Miami hangs on to beat Virginia Tech

FINAL: No. 13 Miami 34, Virginia Tech 17

This game got a lot closer than the Hurricanes would have like in the second half, but they were able to hang on for a road win in Blacksburg.

Miami took a 17-point lead into the locker room at halftime, and it looked like this one was headed for a blowout. Then Virginia Tech fought back in the second half, and the Hokies made things a little hairy for the Hurricanes down the stretch. Virginia Tech got a late touchdown to cut the Miami lead to 10 points, and then it recovered the ensuing onside kick.

However, the Canes defense bowed up as it has for most of the season, and they will roll out of Lane Stadium with a victory.

The Miami offense was silent for much of the second half, but Carson Beck did hit running back Girard Pringle out of the backfield for a pretty 16-yard score in the third quarter.

The Hurricanes did tack on a very late score for the sake of style points (look at that 17-point win, College Football Playoff selection committee).

With this win, Miami is still alive in the race to the ACC Championship Game. However, it still needs a lot of help. Georgia Tech and Virginia both have cleaner paths while Pitt and SMU also remain in the fight. That means the Hurricanes' College Football Playoff fate remains out of their hands.

Oklahoma's defense dominates again, Sooners move one win away from Playoff

FINAL: No. 8 Oklahoma 17, No. 22 Missouri 6

It wasn't pretty football in Norman, but it was winning football for the No. 8 Sooners, as they are now just one win away from a College Football Playoff berth thanks to a 17-6 win over Missouri on Saturday.

The Tigers had some offensive success in the first half, but settled for three field goal attempts on their three trips deep into Oklahoma territory. That conservative play-calling came back to haunt them, as it took them until late in the fourth quarter to make it back into scoring position after the Sooners turned it up a level defensively in the second half. The Tigers had a chance to make things interesting, but dropped a touchdown on fourth down late in the fourth quarter that would've given them some life.

For Oklahoma, it was the kind of performance we've grown accustomed to seeing. The Sooners again leaned on their stout defense and strong special teams unit to wreak havoc, with John Mateer and the offense doing just enough to take advantage of the defense's dominance. The Sooners finished with just 277 yards of offense, but on a day where their defense forced two turnovers and their special teams unit blocked a field goal, that was plenty to get the win.

At 9-2 and solidly inside the top 10 in the College Football Playoff rankings, the Sooners just need to take care of business against LSU next week and they'll be one of the 12 teams with a chance to win a national title. Given how rough things looked after the Texas loss, that's quite the turnaround for Brent Venables and company.

They have clearly established their identity as a defensive football team and don't stray from that. It isn't always pretty, as we saw on Saturday in Norman, but it's hard to argue with the results. Their defense is as good as there is in the country and gives them a chance to hang with just about anyone when they're on their A-game.

Lincoln Riley bet big on Jayden Maiava -- and it's paying off with USC in College Football Playoff contention

For the second time in four years under Lincoln Riley, but for the first time since 2022, USC is entering late November with a top-15 ranking and a shot at the College Football Playoff. If the last year in the Pac-12 and the first year of Big Ten play were bumps in the transitional road, this season has marked a return to form for the Trojans in a new league.

As we prepare for Week 13 and a massive showdown with Oregon (3:30 p.m. ET on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ Premium), the Trojans have a 6-1 record in conference play and are currently tied with the Ducks and Michiganfor third place in the Big Ten. Riley's hiring sought to propel USC back to the center of the college football universe, and though the landscape looks much different than previous title-winning tenures in LA, the current outlook does have the Trojans where they hoped to be for the games that matter the most.

Ohio State moves to 11-0 ahead of Michigan game

FINAL: No. 1 Ohio State 42, Rutgers 9

Playing without wideouts Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate, the top-ranked Buckeyes disposed of the Scarlet Knights behind two touchdowns and 110 yards rushing from Bo Jackson along with a couple scoring tosses from Julian Sayin to stay unbeaten. With next week's showdown at Michigan looming, Ohio State broke up a two-possession game at intermission with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns.

Ryan Day's program has lost four straight to the Wolverines and a win next Saturday puts Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game with a chance at securing the top seed in the College Football Playoff. It would be the Buckeyes' first appearance in the Big Ten final since 2020. They would go on to reach the national championship that season before losing to Alabama.

USC vs. Oregon features 12 players in top 100 NFL Draft prospect rankings including Dante Moore, Makai Lemon

Talent acquisition on the West Coast almost always starts and ends with two schools, Oregon and USC. The recruiting powerhouses pump out pro prospects on an annual basis, and they are stacked once again in 2025, accounting for 12 of the top 100 players in Mike Renner's NFL prospect rankings.

The No. 7 Ducks host the No. 15 Trojans Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+ Premium in a key Big Ten showdown that not only pits some of the most outstanding individual players in the country against each other but could also determine whether one or both teams will reach the College Football Playoff.

Lincoln Riley put in an immense amount of work over the last year to reestablish USC as a premier destination for high school recruits. After emphasizing the transfer portal in the first three seasons of his tenure and seeing diminishing results, the Trojans now boast the No. 1 high school recruiting class in the country, per 247Sports. Riley's efforts on the trail produced three top-100 NFL prospects for 2025, and more are on the way.

Arizona State expected to get star wide receiver back

Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson is expected to make his return from a hamstring injury Saturday against Colorado, according to ESPN. This will be the first time Tyson has touched the field since Arizona State's Oct. 18 win against Texas Tech. He had 10 catches for 105 yards and one touchdown versus the Red Raiders.

In spite of the fact that he has missed three games, Tyson still leads the Sun Devils in catches (57), yards (628) and touchdowns (eight). He had 100 yards receiving in four of Arizona State's first seven games and caught a touchdown in all but one contest in that span. Tyson is widely regarded as one of the top wide receiver prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Oklahoma leads Mizzou 14-6 in a first-half defensive struggle

The Sooners are in their comfort zone right now in Norman, as Mizzou has joined them in the mud for a defensive slugfest that Oklahoma leads 14-6 at the half.

Oklahoma has just 138 yards of offense, but a blocked kick set up its one big play, an 87-yard touchdown to Isaiah Sategna, and then the defense pushed Mizzou back inside its own 10 and forced a bad punt that put Oklahoma on a short field and led to a 35-yard touchdown drive.

The Tigers have moved the ball decently between the 20s, with 179 yards of offense, but they've been unable to get into the end zone once they've gotten in (or near) the red zone. Eli Drinkwitz's conservative decision-making, kicking twice on fourth-and-3 -- with one of those getting blocked and one coming at the 3-yard line just before the half -- will be put under the microscope if the Tigers lose this game.

It's so hard to create scoring chances against this Oklahoma defense and not being more aggressive in trying to get in the end zone in a game where the Sooners have found paint twice could come back to haunt them.

No. 1 Ohio State in the driver's seat against Rutgers

Half: No. 1 Ohio State 14, Rutgers 3

It's been a sleepy start for Ohio State in its final home game of the regular season, but the Buckeyes are starting to assert their will against an overmatched Rutgers squad. Without top wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate, it took a while for Ohio State's offense to truly find its footing. The Buckeyes fumbled on their first drive, scored a touchdown and then punted the ball away after that.

With less than seven minutes to play in the second quarter, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin threw a beautiful ball to wide receiver Brandon Inniss for a 7-yard touchdown that gave the Buckeyes their two-score lead. Sayin is playing well enough without his preferred targets. He completed nine passes for 95 yards and the score over the first 30 minutes.

No. 13 Miami rolling in Blacksburg

Halftime: No. 13 Miami 20, Virginia Tech 3

The Hokies may already be looking ahead to the first year of the James Franklin era in 2026. There has been no letdown for the Hurricanes after they hammered NC State last weekend. Miami took control of this game on its very first drive and hasn't let up.

On their first possession, the Canes moved down the field with ease, especially through the air. It ended with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Carson Beck to Elija Lofton, and Miami was off to the races.

The Hurricanes passing attack has been extremely effective all afternoon. Carson Beck has 190 yards and a pair of touchdowns on just 17 attempts, and Malachi Toney even got in on the fun with a 15-yard completion. Toney did a little bit of everything in that first half. When he wasn't throwing passes, he was posting 102 yards through the air and nine yards on the ground.

The Miami defense was its usual dominant self while facing a listless Virginia Tech offense. The Hokies mustered just 28 yards through the air, and while Virginia Tech did find some room on the ground, the Hurricanes didn't allow them to finish many drives with points.

Oklahoma blocks Mizzou FG then scores on 87-yard TD to take first lead

Oklahoma's offense hadn't done anything of note on Saturday against Mizzou, but as has been the case for most of the season, the defense and special teams for the Sooners kept them close with the Tigers until they could crack a big play.

Down 3-0, the Sooners blocked a short Mizzou field goal as the underdog Tigers opted not to go for it on fourth-and-short and were punished for the conservative decision.

On third down on the ensuing possession for Oklahoma (backed up half the distance after a personal foul after the blocked kick), John Mateer finally connected on a slant with Isaiah Sategna, who did the rest on an 87-yard touchdown as he flashed his elite track speed to put OU on top 7-3.

Oklahoma's offense has a grand total of 20 yards gained outside of this play, but that's all they need right now with the dominance of their defense.

The Six Pack: Picks for USC vs. Oregon, Oklahoma vs. Missouri and Tom Fornelli's lock for Week 13

We are running out of time. Every season seems to fly by, but the end of the 2025 regular season snuck up on me this year. It wasn't until last week that it dawned on me we only had two full Saturdays of action left. Now we're down to one.

With Thanksgiving next week, we'll see a heavy slate of Black Friday games, which waters down the Saturday schedule. Where did the year go? Where did The Six Pack's money go? Well, that last question is easy to answer: down the drain. We couldn't even go 3-3 last week, though we would have if Bill Belichick and Jake Dickert hadn't gotten into a timeout battle at the end of their game that led to Wake Forest scoring a touchdown with 22 seconds left instead of kneeling the clock out.

Hey, maybe we'll go 12-0 these next two weeks and get out of the hole before bowl season.

College football odds, picks, predictions: USC vs. Oregon, Pitt vs. Georgia Tech deliver Week 13 playoff buzz

College football's penultimate weekend of the regular season is here, with several games across the top 25 dripping with significant implications in the College Football Playoff race. USC's trip to Oregon is a playoff elimination matchup for the two-loss Trojans, who need a win to stay in the race, while Pittsburgh's meeting with Georgia Tech carries significant weight in the ACC Championship conversation.

Oklahoma and Miami, two teams in the at-large conversation who need to keep winning, take on upset-minded Missouri and Virginia Tech, respectively. The Sooners' win last week at Alabama pushed them into the top 10 while the Hurricanes have won consecutive games convincingly since a loss at SMU made hopes of getting to the league title game fade.

Injury updates ahead of No. 15 USC vs. No. 7 Oregon

Saturday's Big Ten clash between No. 15 USC and No. 7 Oregon on CBS (and streaming on Paramount+ Premium) is already shaping up to be a battle -- and injuries are adding up for both sides. According to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, the Ducks will be without two of their top playmakers at wide receiver: star freshman Dakorien Moore (knee) and Gary Bryant Jr. (ankle). The duo missed the previous two games with Malik Benson and tight end Kenyon Sadiq seeing an increase in targets as a result.

The Trojans aren't exactly in the clear either. Standout safety Bishop Fitzgerald, who is tied for an FBS-leading five interceptions, is expected to be out, per Zenitz. Fellow safety Kamari Ramsey and left tackle Elijah Paige are also doubtful, leaving USC with several key holes to fill on both sides of the ball in a game that has major College Football Playoff implications for both teams.

Who's the 'Plan B' for college football biggest coaching searches?

The 2025 coaching carousel has quickly become one of the most dramatic and unpredictable cycles in recent memory, with multiple blue-blood programs making seismic moves in search of stability, identity, and a path back to national relevance.

LSU, FloridaPenn State, and Auburn all enter the market with differing agendas but a shared reality: each believes its vacancy is the kind of job that can -- and should -- attract top-tier candidates capable of winning immediately. But the truth is that even the sport's biggest brands need legitimate contingency plans. With competition heating up, political forces shaping searches, and several schools targeting the same top names, identifying the right "Plan B" may ultimately determine which programs regain their footing and which ones fall further behind.

Below is a breakdown of the most logical secondary options for each major opening, a closer look at which names offer the best fit if a program's top target doesn't come through.

Louisville QB Miller Moss out for ACC clash with SMU

Louisville will be without quarterback Miller Moss for its Week 13 ACC clash against SMU, according to ESPN. Moss suffered a foot injury during the week in a weight room accident, per CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz. This will be the first game that Moss has missed since transferring to Louisville from USC. Moss has a 7-3 record as Louisville's starter -- with all three of those losses coming during conference play -- and he's thrown for 2,344 yards and 11 touchdowns to seven interceptions in his first season with the Cardinals.

With Moss sidelined, Louisville will start redshirt freshman Deuce Adams. Adams, a former three-star prospect in the class of 2024, made an appearance off the bench in Louisville's season opener versus Eastern Kentucky and completed two of his three pass attempts for 21 yards. The Cardinals are also expected to rotate redshirt junior Brady Allen into the lineup. Allen tossed his first career touchdown against Eastern Kentucky.

No. 1 Ohio State will be without top two receivers against Rutgers

Top Ohio State wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate were ruled out for Saturday's game against Rutgers with lower body injuries. Neither ailment is thought to be a long-term issue. This will be the third straight game that Tate has missed and the first for Smith, who was listed as questionable leading up to Ohio State's Week 12 game against UCLA. Smith currently leads the Buckeyes with 69 catches for 902 yards and 10 touchdowns. He and Tate, who paces his team with 18.2 yards per catch, have combined for 1,613 of Ohio State's 2,795 yards receiving as a team and 17 of the Buckeyes' 26 touchdowns through the air.

Without its stars, Ohio State will likely lean on veterans Brandon Inniss and Bryson Rodgers. This also provides an increase in opportunity for sophomore Mylan Graham, who ranked as the No. 12 wide receiver in the class of 2024. Graham has six catches for 93 yards on the season.

College Football QB Power Rankings: Gunner Stockton takes No. 1 after slaying Texas, veteran Jeff Sims rises

After dismantling Texas 35-10 last week, No. 4 Georgia is now 3-0 against teams that were ranked inside the top 15 of the AP poll at the time of the contest. In those games, quarterback Gunner Stockton has been nearly perfect.

His latest triumph was a five-touchdown torching of the then-No. 10 Longhorns. It was a team win, but Stockton's individual effort was the sort of performance that should give Heisman voters something to think about. If voters are at all interested in valuing performance in big games, Stockton's record speaks for itself.

He led a fourth quarter rally on Sept. 13 as Georgia came back to win 44-41 in overtime at No. 15 Tennessee. In a 43-35 win over No. 5 Ole Miss on Oct. 18, Stockton led Georgia to scores on every single possession until it was time to take a knee and run out the clock.

Stockton may not be soaring to the top of NFL Draft boards, but he's playing at a high level and doing it against even the best opponents on the Bulldogs' schedule. As a result, Stockton is on the rise to No. 1 in this week's quarterback power rankings.
