Pitt knocks off Georgia Tech to create ACC title game chaos
All Georgia Tech needed to do on Saturday was beat Pitt to punch their ticket to Charlotte for the ACC Championship game, but the Yellow Jackets no-showed the first quarter and dug themselves a 28-0 hole after 20 minutes of play they were never able to fully dig their way out of in a 42-28 loss that creates some real Week 14 chaos in the conference title race.
Pitt jumped all over the Jackets early, with Mason Heintschel slinging it and Pitt's defense creating problems for Haynes King and the GT offense. Georgia Tech would rally to cut the deficit to 14 at the half and they had momentum on their side until the backbreaker -- a 100-yard pick six as they were set to trim the lead to just seven in the third quarter.
They would eventually get it back down to a 7-point deficit after a bizarre Pitt decision to go for a fake punt backfired in the fourth quarter, but Jakyrian Turner bailed out his coach on the ensuing drive with a 56-yard touchdown run that put the game on ice for the Panthers.
With the win, Pitt improves to 8-3 and has just the one loss in conference, meaning a win next week over Miami gives them a chance at reaching Charlotte if SMU or Virginia lose their final game. The Mustangs and Cavaliers are now in the drivers seat for a spot in the title game, but as Georgia Tech learned the hard way, getting that last win to punch your ticket is often the hardest one.
