  • Browns' Amari Cooper: Not in line to play Friday

The Browns have announced that Cooper is among the team's players not expected to play in Friday's preseason opener against the Jaguars.

The same applies to top running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, with the team electing to rest a number of key players Friday. With Cooper -- the team's clear-cut No. 1 wideout -- not in the mix Friday, the Browns' coaching staff will presumably focus on evaluating some of the WRs who are competing for slotting behind him on the team's depth chart.

  • Browns' Amari Cooper: Quick return to practice

Cooper (ankle) returned to practice Wednesday after missing Tuesday's session, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Cooper tweaked his ankle Monday, temporarily depleting a wideout group that's already missing rookie third-round pick David Bell (foot) and 2021 third-round pick Anthony Schwartz (knee). The lack of experience behind Cooper should lead him to a considerable target share as the Browns' obvious No. 1 receiver, though he's coming off a mediocre season in Dallas and likely won't be catching passes from Deshaun Watson (suspension) until at least Week 7.

  • Browns' Amari Cooper: Ankle issue downplayed

Cooper (ankle) won't practice Tuesday, but coach Kevin Stefanski indicated that the wideout should be back soon, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.

Petrak relays that Cooper tweaked his ankle during Monday's practice, but it doesn't sound like a major issue for the Browns' top wideout. His absence does, however, further tax the depth of the team's WR corps, with David Bell (foot) and Anthony Schwartz (knee) also currently sidelined.

  • Browns' Amari Cooper: Looked at by trainer

Cooper was attended to briefly by a trainer after catching a touchdown in red-zone drills during Monday's practice, Anthony Poisal of the Browns' official site reports.

The trainer checked out Cooper's right ankle, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports, but the receiver walked to the sideline under his own power. Cooper remained on the sideline for the remainder of practice, and Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski did not provide an update.
