Thompson is still working his way back from a hamstring injury that forced the team to place him on injured reserve in late September, and he is not ready to return to practice quite yet. In his absence, P.J. Locke (concussion), Malik Hooker and Markquese Bell are poised to continue to operate as the Cowboys' primary safeties for the time being.

Turpin has missed the past two contests with the injury, and his Week 9 prep isn't off on the right foot. Jonathan Mingo and Camden Brown handled reserve wideout duties behind CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens (hamstring) and Ryan Flournoy last Sunday against the Cardinals.

Cowboys' P.J. Locke: Remains in concussion protocol
Locke was still in concussion protocol Wednesday as the Cowboys began preparing for their Week 9 matchup at Indianapolis, Joe Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Per Patrik Walker of the Cowboys' official site, Locke did not participate at practice Wednesday. Locke sat out five straight games prior to Week 8 because of a foot injury, and now his availability for Week 9 is up in the air after he suffered a concussion in Week 8. Whether he's able to practice Thursday or Friday should provide more insight into his status for Sunday's game against the Colts.

Downs remained in concussion protocol Wednesday as the Cowboys began preparing for their Week 9 matchup at Indianapolis, Joe Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Per Patrik Walker of the Cowboys' official site, Downs did not participate at practice Wednesday. Downs hasn't missed a game yet as a pro, but his status for Sunday's game against the Colts is in doubt after he suffered a concussion in Week 8. His activity at practice Thursday and Friday should give a clearer indication as to whether he'll be able to suit up in Week 9.

Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Officially unavailable for practice
Ferguson (ankle) did not participate at the Cowboys' practice Wednesday, Patrik Walker of the team's official site reports.
As expected, Ferguson was unavailable for practice as he worked off to the side with the team's training staff. The tight end is working through a low-ankle sprain that he suffered during the team's 33-30 overtime loss to Arizona in Week 8, and his availability for Sunday's matchup against the Colts is in question. Ferguson will have two more chances to return to practice this week, but if he can't go for Week 9, Brevyn Spann-Ford would be a top candidate to take over as the primary tight end for Dallas.

Cowboys' George Pickens: Limited in Wednesday's practice
Pickens (hamstring) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Patrik Walker of the Cowboys' official site reports.
Pickens was limited by shoulder and hamstring injuries last week, but he was able to suit up this past Sunday against the Cardinals, logging a 57 percent snap share and gathering in two of four targets for 48 yards. As Week 9 prep kicks off, he's being listed with only the hamstring issue, which continues to impact his on-field work. Pickens will have two more chances to get back to full Thursday and Friday before Dallas potentially tags him with a designation for Sunday's contest at Indianapolis.

Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Working with trainers Wednesday
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Ferguson (ankle) will work with the Cowboys' training staff during Wednesday's practice, Briana Aldridge of CBS News Texas reports.
Such comments are an indication that Ferguson will go down as a DNP to kick off Week 9 prep, something that'll be revealed on Wednesday's injury report. Ferguson is tending to a low-ankle sprain in the wake of this past Sunday's loss to the Cardinals.

Cowboys' Tyler Goodson: Held in check Sunday
Goodson took seven carries for 14 yards and caught both of his two targets for 19 yards during Sunday's 33-30 overtime loss versus the Cardinals.
Dallas wasn't really able to get anything going on the ground in Week 8, totaling just 93 rushing yards on 39 carries. Just like the offense as a whole, Goodson found a bit more success in the passing game, and he posted his best receiving total since back in 2024. As long as starter Javonte Williams remains available, though, Goodson should stay in a change-of-pace role.

Cowboys' Brevyn Spann-Ford: Makes four grabs Sunday
Spann-Ford caught four of five targets for 31 yards during Sunday's 33-30 overtime loss versus the Cardinals.
Starting tight end Jake Ferguson was only able to log four offensive snaps before leaving Sunday's contest with an ankle injury, and Spann-Ford ended up playing a career-high 65 offensive snaps as a result. He ended up second on the team in targets behind CeeDee Lamb (11), and he could be worth a look as a streaming option in deeper formats if Ferguson is unable to suit up in Week 9 at Indianapolis.
