  • Colts' Jonathan Taylor: Preseason action unlikely

Taylor, who didn't play in Saturday's preseason loss to the Bills, is unlikely to see game action in the Colts' remaining two exhibition contests according to coach Frank Reich, JJ Stankevitz of the team's official site reports.

"That's really what Chris (Ballard) and I talked about," Reich noted of the likelihood that the Colts would play it safe in the preseason with their franchise back. "I can't see that changing for any reason. So, he's looked good, he's in shape, I feel like we're getting good work in practice versus our defense." With Taylor entrenched as Indy's lead back and Nyheim Hines in line to serve as the squad's primary change-of-pace option, depth slotting behind them is up for grabs, leaving Phillip Lindsay, Ty'Son Williams, Deon Jackson, D'Vonte Price and CJ Verdell currently competing for roster spots ahead of Week 1.

  • Colts' Jonathan Taylor: Not likely to play Saturday

Taylor isn't expected to play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Bills, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.

The report notes that starting QB Matt Ryan is expected to play about one quarter in the contest. However, coming off a huge 2021 campaign, Taylor doesn't have anything to prove in the preseason, and the Colts seem likely to play it safe with their star back this weekend and quite possibly in their next two exhibition outings as well.

  • Colts' Jonathan Taylor: Set to reprise lead role

As training camp approaches, Taylor continues to head an Indianapolis backfield that also includes returnee Nyheim Hines and newcomer Phillip Lindsay, Kevin Hickey of USA Today reports.

Taylor thus is set to reprise his lead role this coming season, one that yielded a league-high 1,811 rushing yards to go along with 18 TDs on 322 carries in 17 games in 2021. The 23-year-old also chipped in 40 catches on 51 targets for 360 yards and two more scores in an effort that has his name currently atop most 2022 fantasy draft boards. While Taylor is the team's clear-cut top early-down option and in the process is poised to maintain elite fantasy status, Hines will continue to provide a pass-catching/change-of-pace presence out of the Colts backfield, with Lindsay the favorite to secure the team's No. 3 RB role now that Marlon Mack is no longer in the mix. Also vying for depth chart slotting will be Deon Jackson, Ty'Son Williams, D'Vonte Price and CJ Verdell.
