Tomorrow's Top 25 Today: Wisconsin, Tennessee should power into top 10
A projection at what the AP Top 25 will look like after Week 4
There were some major games played on Saturday, but as things currently stand, it doesn't appear as if there will be too much chaos taking place in the new AP Top 25 this week.
The biggest shakeups will come as a result of Wisconsin's 30-6 victory at Michigan State, Ole Miss' 45-14 rout of Georgia, and the epic comeback by Tennessee against Florida, though none might result in a drastic shift.
Both Wisconsin and Tennessee look to climb into the top 10 while Georgia and Michigan State will surely fall quite a bit, but other than that, things should remain rather stable.
If you don't believe me, just check out our prediction for Sunday's AP Top 25 poll.
* Denotes team is still in action and ranking is based on assumption the higher-ranked team wins game
1. Alabama (Previous AP Top 25 ranking -- 1): The Tide won't have to worry about moving anywhere after an easy 48-0 victory against Nick Saban's alma mater Kent State. It was nice of Nick to call off the dogs in the second half; Alabama had a 41-0 lead at halftime. Maybe he was hoping that showing mercy would allow him to give less next time they come looking for a donation.
2. Ohio State (2): The Buckeyes took the weekend off, and they won't suffer in the polls because of it. Rutgers comes to Columbus next week to begin the conference slate.
3. Louisville (3): Lamar Jackson continues to be amazing. He passed for 417 yards and five touchdowns, and also rushed for 62 yards and two more scores in Louisville's 59-28 romp at Marshall. Now the Cardinals get ready take on Clemson in a huge game next week.
4. Michigan (4): Michigan opened conference play with a rather easy 49-10 victory against Penn State. Through four games, the Wolverines are winning by an average of 38.25 points per game with last week's 17-point win over Colorado being the closest game the Wolverines have played.
5. Clemson (5): Clemson finally started to look like Clemson again against Georgia Tech on Thursday night, though there were still some flaws showing in the red zone. Can the Tigers get it all together before next week's game against Louisville?
6. Houston (6): The Cougars crushed Texas State 64-3 on Saturday night, but beating the Bobcats by 61 probably isn't going to be enough to bump them up to the top five.
7. Stanford (7): The Cardinal scored a touchdown in the final minute to take a 16-13 lead on UCLA and then stripped quarterback Josh Rosen on the final play of the game as UCLA prepped for one last Hail Mary heave. Solomon Thomas picked the ball up and took it to the house to give Stanford a 22-13 victory. The touchdown was very significant for some folks around the country (particularly in Las Vegas), but I don't think it'll be enough to move Stanford up in the polls.
8. Wisconsin (11): In one of the more surprising results from Saturday, Wisconsin crushed Michigan State 30-6 in East Lansing. That 24-point drubbing should be enough to get Wisconsin into the top 10 this week.
9. Texas A&M (10): You tell yourself every year not to buy into the Aggies after they start 4-0. It happens all the time, and they always let you down. You tell yourself, and you tell yourself, but then the Aggies beat Arkansas 45-24 behind solid offense and an impressive defense, and the next thing you know you're like "this team can hang with Bama, man." Right now, what other team besides Alabama would you consider better than A&M in the SEC West?
10. Tennessee (14): The monkey is off Tennessee's back! It beat Florida! And it did so in dramatic fashion, coming back from a 21-0 deficit to top the Gators 38-28. With Georgia's loss against Ole Miss, the Vols are now in the driver's seat in the SEC East.
11. Washington (9): Washington won against Arizona but I still expect it to drop a spot or two for a couple of reasons. First of all, voters -- if they were even awake long enough -- won't be all that impressed about an overtime victory against an average Arizona team. Secondly, other teams had more impressive Saturdays than the Huskies, so they're going to get leapt over.
12. Florida State (13): Early in the first quarter, it looked like the Seminoles were still playing Louisville, but Jimbo Fisher's boys got their act together and ended up winning rather comfortably. Still, that defense is a concern as the Noles head into ACC play.
13. Miami (15): Miami took the week off. I hope the Canes got some good time in at the beach.
14. Baylor (16): Baylor remains the Big 12's best hope for a playoff spot after beating Oklahoma State 35-24. Still, I don't think the pollsters will reward the Bears much for the victory, but at least the Big 12 should have a team back in the top 15.
15. Nebraska (20): The Cornhuskers picked up a nice 24-13 victory on the road against Northwestern to improve to 4-0 on the season, 1-0 in conference play. They stand to move up a few spots both for the win and due to a couple teams that were ahead of it dropping down.
16. Ole Miss (23): Well, what do you know. Ole Miss jumped out to an early lead on its opponent -- and then held on! I guess this team isn't too bad when it's not playing Florida State or Alabama. Seriously, it had to feel good for Ole Miss to not only get a win but to crush somebody like Georgia 45-14 in the process.
17. Utah (24): Did you stay up late to watch the Utes on Friday night? I hope you did, because it was an exciting comeback to beat USC late in the fourth quarter. Utah's looking like a real contender in the Pac-12 South once again.
18. Texas (21): Texas took the week off, and we think it'll drop a couple of spots not just because of what happened around it in the polls but also due to that Notre Dame victory now looking less impressive with every passing week.
19. Georgia (12): Nothing was working for the Bulldogs in Oxford. Every possible flaw Georgia could have was exposed in its 45-14 loss, and now it's a game behind Tennessee in the SEC East. The good news is the Dawgs still get to play both the Gators and Vols, so they still control their own destiny.
20. Michigan State (8): It was a horrible Saturday for Sparty. First it lost at home to Wisconsin by 24, and then later in the day it watched Notre Dame get shellacked by Duke, meaning its victory against the Irish last week in South Bend no longer looks like much of a big deal.
21. TCU (NR): The Horned Frogs re-enter the rankings after a 33-3 win over SMU. The biggest takeaway from TCU's win was that its defense, which had been playing poorly all season, had its best game by miles against the Mustangs. If that continues into Big 12 play, this is a Horned Frogs team that could once again compete for a conference title.
22. Arkansas (17): Arkansas's 45-24 loss to Texas A&M is going to sting for a while. Between a couple of fumbles at the goal line, and a strange play call on a fourth-and-goal, it can be argued the Razorbacks left 21 points out on the field Saturday night. That's kind of a big deal when you lose by 21. Still, I don't think the pollsters will punish the Hogs too badly.
23. San Diego State (22): The Aztecs took the week off, but with all the action surrounding it in the poll, I think it'll move down a little through no fault of its own.
24. Florida (19): The fact that Florida was playing with its backup quarterback and led 21-0 at half against the No. 14 team in the nation will keep the voters from punishing it too much. I mean, it's still 3-1, and it's only loss was on the road to what will be a top-10 team.
25. Oklahoma (25): There's a chance Oklahoma drops out after not playing this week, but the question is who will replace it? It's possible Boise State sneaks in, but I think odds are better the Sooners remain.
Dropped Out: LSU (18)
New Additions: TCU
