    Analysis

I don't think that much of Detroit, especially without Dylan Larkin, but it's the home opener in Hockeytown (not sure that moniker applies any longer) and the Rangers already playing the second of a B2B. Veteran backup goalie Joonas Korpisalo is injured so it's rookie Dylan Garand in net tonight presumably for NYR. He was very good last year but only three starts and when the Blueshirts were long eliminated. John Gibson we pretty much know will be solid but not amazing for the Wings.

    Analysis

This is Pittsburgh’s first test of the season and it comes on the road, after a cupcake schedule to kick off the season. The Hokies almost snubbed their toe last week at Boston College, coming back in the 4th quarter but weather was a factor. The Panthers defensive line should be able slowdown the Virginia Tech run game, making them beat them through the air as the rank 41st in passing defense. Panthers have the more dynamic offense to keep this one close.

    Analysis

One of the biggest games of the weekend, even if neither team has one of those little numbers next to their names. Both teams have gotten off to great starts, but their overall numbers are skewed by each playing one game in horrific weather. I like Pitt's offense a little more, so if I can grab a field goal, I'll take it.

    Analysis

The defending Stanley Cup champions look to avoid a 0-2 start, with both at home, for some early urgency before flying out to play in Philly on Saturday. On the bright side, the Carolina penalty kill went 7-for-7 in that 1-0 opening loss to Florida. Go 7-for-7 on the PK and allow a single goal tonight, and I'll certainly take my chances. Alex Ovechkin opens presumably his final season with the Caps off an injury that affected him in the preseason. Front end of a B2B for Washington as well. Logan Thompson is in net tonight, and his road splits weren't nearly as good as home last season.

    Analysis

Pittsburgh goes to Virginia Tech, and both teams are 4-0 and 3-1 ATS. The difference with Virginia Tech rests with their coach, James Franklin, who was hired this season after the team had a three-win season last year. Coaching matters, and Franklin is the perfect example of why. Pitt has an average score of 18-14, while Virginia Tech averages 43-16. The spread has dropped from Tech -3.5 to -2 in this game. so I'll lay it. Electric atmosphere in Blacksburg at night. Virginia Tech to win.
